Dear friends and partners,

This week, schools were closed, but our work continued. As the coronavirus pandemic has led LA County to issue a "Safer at Home" order, Angelenos have all been called on to rise to the occasion and adapt in the midst of an unprecedented moment, and everyone at LA Unified is working tirelessly to meet the needs of our families.

We opened 60 Grab & Go food centers in partnership with the Red Cross, where families who rely on us for food security can still get nutritious meals every day, and thousands of our employees signed up to help staff these sites. Our amazing teachers and administrators have spent countless hours getting continued learning up and running for students, while many of them are also suddenly watching their own children at home. For the first time, the District sent text message updates to reach more families. And we are also redoubling our efforts to close the digital divide for our students by assessing the need and working to fill that need urgently—because in this era, connectivity is not a luxury. It’s a necessity.

I want to say thank you to our employees and countless partners who have stepped up to help us support our families—not to mention to all the families helping their kids adjust to a very different type of school day while they, too, try to adjust.

We are all doing our best to adapt to an ever-evolving situation, and as we face inevitable bumps in the road, I am inspired by the way our school communities have met this moment and continue to overcome obstacles. While we don’t know how long this new normal will last, we are preparing for the possibility that these precautions could be necessary for longer than two weeks. I will continue to push for rapid, transparent communication with all stakeholders, and provide updates as we have them.

Read on for more on all these efforts, useful resources, and how you can help.

LAUSD's Decision to Close Schools
Why We Closed LA's Schools: Check out my op-ed in the New York Times on the difficult decision to close schools for 700,000 students, forcing us to grapple with two crises—a global pandemic and child poverty, which increasingly strains districts trying to fill gaps in our social safety net.
I joined Dr. Drew and Elex Michaelson last Friday to discuss the difficult decision and how we are working to meet the needs of the families who rely on our schools for education and other essential services.
Meeting the Needs of our Families and Employees

We opened 60 LAUSD school sites as "Grab & Go" meal sites, and I checked in on the ones in Board District 4 to thank our amazing volunteers, while we all maintained critical distancing and hygiene practices to support our students who rely on these school meals. These centers will remain open during the County's "Safer at Home" order, from 7a-10a every weekday.

You can find all the site from LAUSD and our charter partners (all serving all families) here. 👇🏼
Help us support students who no longer have the benefit of being in school every day: LAUSD started this fund with community partners to help provide meals and urgently needed supplies, provide devices, digital libraries, and books, and help students to continue learning.
You can also donate here to help families with the basics, like rent, food, and childcare.
