tonight's pick-me-ups

Things we're doing to unwind and get cozy before bed tonight:

💻 Making it work. All it takes is a little bit of creativity to
make a desk out of pretty much anything. Do breakfast and work in bed with a double duty food tray or opt for a pop-up coffee table for a desk with a view.

Whipping up something good. Social media brings a variety of new trends to light,
like whipped coffee. Made with instant coffee, sugar, milk, and a lot of elbow grease, this dream worthy drink is def worth a try.

🥧 Digging in. Comfort food is on the top of everyone's list in times of stress and nothing screams comfort like pot pie.
This delicious take on the traditional favorite is made with chickpeas, miso, and puff pastry pillows. #MeatlessMonday

👚 Boosting our moods. What we wear has a lot to do with how we feel, so we're taking a page from Elle Woods' book on this one.
Legally Blonde hot pink is associated with love, compassion, and kindness (which we could all use a little bit more of right now).

Reads when you're up late anyway. Here are tonight's round-up for every occasion:

 CAREER
For when it's time to stick to a schedule ~ As our daily routines get disrupted, it's essential to create a new normal to keep yourself on track. "Under the abnormal circumstances we find ourselves in now, having a schedule isn’t just helpful, it is essential. It will mean the difference between feeling like you have no grounding and sense of direction, leading you to waste huge amounts of time each day, and developing a sense of clarity, purpose, and productivity. Almost all of the normal structures that drove your time — train schedule, school schedule, activities schedule — have disappeared ... You may find yourself staying up later than usual while engrossed in the most recent latest headlines. This scenario does not need to become your reality. In fact, no commute can be an opportunity for you to rest better than ever. Not only will this help you become more productive, but it will also boost your mood and immune system."

CULTURE  For when you weeble and you wobble ~ The Shedd Aquarium is giving us the content our quarantined minds are craving. Wellington's Wobble, a video of  penguins taking a field trip around the aquarium, proved to be a sweet spot to brighten our days. "Like most Americans, Wellington is seeing fewer people these days. His home, the John G. Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, is closed to visitors because of public health measures aimed at preventing the spread of coronavirus. So when the 32-year-old rockhopper penguin went on a walkabout on Sunday, he got to explore exhibits he usually can’t. Wellington and the other penguins often go on such 'field trips,' [Michelle Nastasowski, one of the Shedd’s animal care experts] said. Last week, she decided to take advantage of the newfound empty space for their walk. It was a family outing. His son, Edward, and his partner, Annie, (they have two chicks together) also went exploring, walking past the empty information desk. Annie is more likely to shy away from the spotlight, Nastasowski explained."

TRENDING  For when Spring cleaning also applies to your inbox ~ Despite not getting out much these days, our inboxes have still stayed pretty busy as we're flooded with emails from every store we've every even thought of buying something from. "There seems to be three tiers of brand emails at this point. First, the service message. This is the most important and helpful, the ones that inform us about a change in service, an updated policy, or a relevant discount. Tier Two is the Brand Friend. This is where brands who have built a direct line of communication with customers feel obligated to at least acknowledge the situation, even if it’s just to say hi with a 'We’re all in this together' drum-circle vibe. The third tier is the seemingly completely random, we-just-happened-to-have-your-email-thanks-for-buying-our-cat-food-three-years-ago message. According to brand and PR pros, that third tier shouldn’t exist and companies need to be clear and deliberate in their communication strategy."

FUN  For when you felt cute, don't delete later ~ Tuning in to social media to follow along with other people's lives, even if they seem just as boring as your own, is essential. "On Friday, in the middle of my fifth consecutive workday spent utterly alone, I snapped. The world was 410 square feet, and I would have paid money to look up close at a face other than my own. Instead of sobbing into my elbow, I picked up my phone and watched an Instagram Story of a college acquaintance’s girlfriend, sitting on his bed, taking a videoconference call with her co-workers. That was just the first one. I watched little clips of friends and strangers lying on couches and spraying down surfaces. A former co-worker was recording a podcast from inside her coat closet, while a woman who attends the same weekly karaoke night as my old roommate was singing 'Germ Free Adolescents' in her bathroom. It was an extremely mundane glimpse into the new reality for many Americans ... Selfies might get funnier, because bored designers will surely upload bizarre augmented-reality filters. There will be a lot more videos of regular people explaining how to cook things or how to do a choreographed dance or how to play some strange regional card game."

🧘‍♀️ Try the Sphinx pose to open your chest and lower back 🧘‍♀️
  • Come onto your belly with your legs behind you.
  • Place your forearms on the mat so your elbows are directly underneath your shoulders. Keep your hips resting on the floor as you gently press your chest away from your hands.
  • Actively roll your shoulders away from your ears, elongating your neck. Gaze in front of you or lower your head back between your shoulder blades to deepen the stretch.
  • Hold for five breaths.
☁️🌛 Goodnight and go tuck yourself ☁️
