Letter From the President

Assalaamu Alaikum Brothers and Sisters

Earlier today Dutchess County declared a state of emergency. While this step is expected and prudent, it does have wide reaching effects on all of us and in particular for our mosque. County Executive Molinaro has suspended all large, community gatherings effective March 13. With regard to our mosque operations, this means that as expected weekly Jummah services are suspended until further notice. We will be monitoring this rapidly evolving situation and we will be updating all of you frequently inshallah. The mosque will remain open for the regular five daily prayers, which will continue to be led by Imam Badar Usmani. Please note that public gatherings are limited to 20 people or less. On Friday, the imam will lead a regular Zhur prayer without a khutbah. All other other masjid events have been cancelled. Please check into the MHIA Community Page on Facebook for regular updates about the status of Jummah services as well as other updates. We will, of course, also send out email notifications as needed.
The current developments are certainly unprecedented and I know that the temporary loss of Jummah services feels difficult. However, as Muslims it is our duty to do what is needed to do our part in safeguarding the greater public good. We know that ultimately it is Allah (SWT) who grants each and every one of us health and wellness. He has also granted us the ability to be proactive and exercise agency in taking care of ourselves and each other. By taking these precautionary steps we are joining our brothers and sisters in keeping this virulent illness contained. Inshallah, all of our communities will come through this safely.
If you or someone in your family does become ill, please consult your medical care providers immediately. Please know that MHIA is here to support all community members in any way possible. If you or anyone you know in the community is in need of assistance, please reach out to Imam Usmani, any member of the Board of Trustees, or any member of the Executive Committee.
Jazakallah,
Pashmina Rashad
Coronavirus Advisory
It is important to follow the advice of our local and national health officials. It is important to note that as of now health officials are not recommending closure of faith based organizations. Based on guidelines provided by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for faith based organization, here are some basic, common sense steps we can take to protect ourselves and our more vulnerable community members.
  1. Older adults and individuals who have severe underlying chronic health conditions such as heart disease, lung disease or diabetes are encouraged to avoid crowds as much as possible. For more information: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/specific-groups/high-risk-complications.html
  2. Clean your hands often.
    • Wash often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after you  have been out in public, or after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.
    • If soap and water are not available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
    • Avoid touching your face, mouth, and eyes.
  3. Avoid close contact.
    • Avoid close contact with sick people.
    • If you are sick, or not feeling well, stay home and avoid exposing others. Avoid going out except to access medical care.
  4. Protect others.
    • If you are sick, avoid public spaces.
    • Cover your coughs or sneezes with tissue or the inside of your elbow.
    • Wash or sanitize your hands immediately after coughing or sneezing.
    • Avoid shaking hands with others.
    • Wear a face mask if you are sick. If you are not sick, you do not need to wear a mask unless you are caring for someone who is sick.
  5. Clean and disinfect.
    • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces.
    • Use bleach solutions (1/3 cup bleach per gallon of water) or alcohol solutions that are at least 70% alcohol to clean surfaces frequently.
