Upcoming March Events

A note about listed events: We are aware of the heightened concern in Solano County and throughout the Bay Area about the spread of coronavirus. To keep our workshop attendees, participants, staff and volunteers safe during this time of uncertainty, we will be postponing all of our events planned through March 29. We will constantly be monitoring the latest guidance to make decisions on events planned after March 29 and will provide updates as needed. Read more here.

Monday, March 30

Bounty of the County Planning Meeting
2-3 pm, Solano County Fairgrounds, 900 Fairgrounds Drive, Vallejo

This will be the first planning meeting for farmers; food, beer and wine producers; independent restaurants; and vendors interested in participating in the Bounty of the County on Aug. 29. Bounty of the County will be a celebration of food grown in Solano County at the Solano County Fairgrounds. There will be chef competitions, food tasting, produce for sale, wine and beer tasting, music and art. The March 30 meeting will be an opportunity to tour through the space, get your questions answered and be part of determining how we can make this inaugural event a success! RSVP is required.

April 4, 11 am-12:30 pm, Farm-to-Table Cooking Class and CSA Demonstration (The Lazy Barn, 735 Texas St., Fairfield)

Join Sustainable Solano’s Local Food Program Manager Stephanie Oelsligle Jordan for a lively demonstration cooking class that celebrates spring ingredients and supports local farmers. Come see which Community Supported Agriculture offerings are coming soon to The Lazy Barn, plus learn tips and tricks for storing ingredients and cooking seasonally from a CSA box. Chef Steph will prepare an Asparagus Salad with Sesame-Tangerine Vinaigrette and Sautéed Radishes and highlight the health benefits of these Solano-grown specialty crops. Generous tastings and recipe packets included! Registration required ($10 per person/$15 for two).

April 11, 10 am-4 pm, Vegetable Garden Installation (Register for Address, Vacaville)

Join us for the installation of a vegetable garden that will benefit Opportunity House residents in Vacaville. This project will serve as a source of fresh produce and a hub of information for anyone interested in learning more about organic and sustainable gardening! Learn about sustainable landscape practices and the principles of sustainable urban agriculture through the installation of this edible garden. Register here.

April 18, 9 am-12 pm, Benicia Community Gardens Cleanup Day (Avant and Swenson gardens, Benicia)

It is not required that you have a box at either garden; everyone is welcomed and encouraged to participate. If you have a garden bed, this is the perfect opportunity to contribute volunteer hours. For those who don’t have a garden bed, it’s a good chance to see how it all works and sign up for a garden bed! Cleanup activities will include weeding and prepping garden beds, among other activities. More details here!

April 25, 9 am-2 pm, Demonstration Food Forest Garden Tour (Gardens in Benicia and Vallejo, Tour starts at Avant Garden in Benicia)

Join us for Sustainable Solano’s annual spring Demonstration Food Forest Garden Tour in Benicia and Vallejo. Tour through a dozen private and public gardens that show what can be done to create edible, waterwise landscapes that support communities and provide natural habitat. The day will start with a talk from a permaculture expert before participants embark on the self-guided tour. Learn more and register here!
 

April 25, 8:45-11 am, 'Dig in Deeper' Private Garden Tour (Starts at Avant Garden in Benicia)

Join permaculture expert John Valenzuela for a bonus tour of a private garden as a special addition to the Benicia/Vallejo Demonstration Food Forest Garden Tour. Participants will attend John's public talk and then follow him to one of the demonstration food forest gardens for a guided tour of the property. John will discuss the secondary water features of this garden, the plant selection and placement and will answer questions from participants. Space is limited. Learn more and register here!

Find Ways to Connect 

With so many cancellations, it may seem difficult to find ways to connect with others when so much of the work we do involves engaging with those in our communities. Some organizations are offering virtual gatherings to fill that need, such as Now What?! 2020, which includes learning opportunities, engagement streams, virtual cafes and more. Opening Gathering is March 23.
