Root Update Regarding COVID-19

Dear beloved Root community,

With heavy, heavy hearts, we at Root are making the tough decision to close our physical doors and cancel all on-site classes for the next two weeks as we do our part to slow the spread of Covid-19. As of tonight, Root will be closed for public classes. Like so many small businesses, we love what we do, and we are dedicated to the well-being of the community in which we serve. Given there is so much we DON’T know about this virus, we are going to take the critical steps we DO know can make a difference.

While we love being together with you all, right now the priority is your wellness and the wellness of those whose lives are most vulnerable to inadvertent exposure. Like so many, we will be reassessing over the next two weeks what the longer-term plans will be, and we will continue to update you through our newsletter, the Root website, Facebook and Instagram.

We recognize that at times like this, we need the refuge and support of community more than ever. And so my personal commitment to you is that I will continue to support this community by shifting gears and finding innovative ways to stay connected across time and space. While the physical doors are closing temporarily, the virtual sacred space is going to be as robust as possible. As painful as it is to step back from one another in space, we trust that a precautionary and proactive response to the potential will be far easier on us all than a panicked reaction.

Yoga is the practical and practicable means of uniting what feels fragmented, broken, or disconnected. And so, the Yoga will go on.

We ask that, as we take these steps, you continue to support the work and vision of Root, which has never been bound by one space.

Here is what we are doing over the next two weeks:

  • The schedule is going to change. A lot. At this very moment, we are busy behind the scenes preparing to make LIVE streaming classes available to you for use with your current Root passes. Some classes are just going to be hitting “pause” for a while. And we will be adding new classes, series, and workshops, too. (For example, the weekly dig-in that is Breath, Bhakti & Samadhi will be back on the schedule, and keep your eyes and ears peeled for Home Practice 101, the Yoga of Loss series, and other workshops you can do from anywhere). Please know, we do plan to extend all expiration dates on currently held passes/credits as soon as we re-open.
  • For now, we will be using the online platform of Zoom (through which I myself have long been “meeting” with clients, teaching students, and offering workshops). Zoom will enable you to join us live from wherever you are. Here is how that works:
    • All classes available to stream will be listed on our schedule online.
    • You can PRE-REGISTER for the class, just like you do normally. Please pre-register no later than 10 minutes before the class starts.
    • Pre-registered students will be emailed an “invite” link to join.
    • Please log on and join in via the Zoom link no later than 10 minutes before class is set to start. You will be in a “waiting room” while the teacher takes attendance and deducts a credit from your Root credits, so your (Tula) account will reflect that.
    • If you’re out of class credits and need to pay for that class, you can purchase your Root pass online or let the teacher know during check-in at the start of our practice.
  • We are working on building online course portals through which you can take certain classes ANYTIME (versus live streaming), and we are already set up to offer workshops, etc. for you to do at your own pace. Watch for our next newsletter for details.
Please keep in mind that your continued support is what will make all the difference in the long run. Offering you meaningful and supportive work means everything to us, and we promise to continue this support by offering ample and varied class content in the virtual sanctuary until we can re-open our doors.

While online yoga forums are ubiquitous, Root has always been about the grassroots community that fosters an ACTUAL direct relationship with one another. I have been teaching in this town since 2005, and it has been a supreme privilege to root down and grow with you all. The teachers I have brought on board at Root are devoted and passionate. And we are all here with you. There are plenty of online yoga class sites, but we believe that the real transformative power of these practices happens when we are in the presence of a teacher who sees us and knows us. Please stick with us at this time. Root is taking a huge leap of faith moving into the unknown in order to do what we know is right, and we are asking you to take that leap with us. Together, anything is possible.

Some of you have asked how else you can support Root during this time. First, thank you for asking. Here are a few options.
  • Buy a pass. Our Infinity Pass has no expiration so those class credits will just hang out in your account until our doors are open again, and the funds will help us keep the behind-the-scenes work going.
  • Purchase an Infinity Pass as a gift for a friend or family member. When this is over, plan to bring them to class with you and help us grow the community.
  • Consider purchasing an unlimited pass: monthly, six-month, or full year. These passes will give you access to ALL that we offer online and on-site through Root over the coming months and year.
  • Not local? Join us online! You can purchase individual classes or packaged passes and use them for our upcoming online options. (We’re actually pretty excited about seeing some of your across-the-country faces on Zoom.)
Finally, these are rough times. And it might help to have some time given just to you. If you or someone you know might benefit from a 1:1 Yoga Therapy, Off the Mat, Mentoring, or other individual online session, my schedule will be opening up a bit more as our movement in and out of spaces is limited. The individual work is really a most powerful way to augment, deepen, and frame what you do in classes. From creating a relevant home practice to using Yogic tools to process anxiety or grief, we can tailor an hour of time to support you. Tweaking alignment, healing broken hearts, developing coping mechanisms, re-framing fear … I am happy to work with you 1:1 or have one of the yoga therapists working beside me at Root offer you that individualized support. You can schedule directly through RootRx online or email us at: info@rootdownandgrow to discuss your specific needs.

PLEASE follow us on Facebook for regular updates, etc. and we will try to send newsletters only as there are changes that merit a bigger email. And if you have any questions, requests (is there a class or class time you would like to stream?), or other thoughts, let us know.

My heart is heavy, but as we redefine what it means to be truly interconnected, I also feel a kind of hope and excitement.

What a privilege it is to continue to serve you all. On behalf of the collective of teachers and background angels, we thank you for all you call forth in us.

And, Now is Yoga.
(from Yoga Sutra I.1 atha yoga anuśāsanam)

With great love and humble thanks,
Jessica
