Dear Jones Family,

Governor Pritzker announced last Friday that all schools in Illinois will be closed Tuesday, March 17 through Monday, March 30 due to the nation-wide COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak.  School will resume on Tuesday, March 31.  As we plan for the next two weeks, please be assured that the safety and health of our students are paramount. While schools will be closed, we will be working to thoroughly clean and sanitize our campus facilities so they are ready when students return to class. We are also committed to helping our students continue their learning during the time they are away from school. There is a great deal to communicate, but I will try to touch the most important points so you will know how we are proceeding.
  • MONDAY, MARCH 16: Monday is a B Day (as scheduled), with an early release similar to a B Day Friday.  We are retaining the B Day schedule to minimize the amount of student movement through the school day. There will be PA announcements at 8:00 am explaining details of the day. After periods 5, 6, and 7 are completed, students will report to their Ac Labs at 1:45 pm for attendance and last minute announcements.  Students will be dismissed from their Ac Labs and school at approximately 2:00 pm.  Students should plan to take home any materials (texbooks, notebooks, calculators, etc.) that they may need; they will not have access to the building again until March 31.
  • STUDENT LEARNING CONTINUESTeachers will be preparing meaningful learning activities for students and communicating via Google Classroom, email, and other CPS approved electronic media during the period of our school's closure. These activities and assignments will be geared to support instruction in your students' classes, as well as providing enrichment opportunities to reinforce and expand upon classroom learning. We will also be posting on our website optional grade-level enrichment activities provided by CPS. I understand that many students may be seeing this as an additional two weeks of Spring Break. Please encourage and support your students in making the most of the learning opportunities their teachers are providing.  Students will be able to communicate with their teachers via email, Google Classroom, and other media already established for the class.  NOTE:  Students who do not have access to a computer at home may check out a Chromebook and charging cable before leaving school on Monday.  Comcast is providing additional WiFi access during the school closures; we will make that information available on our website.
  • ALL STUDENT ACTIVITIES ARE CANCELLED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. This includes all athletic or other practices, either coach/director or student/team led, on or off campus. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.
  • BUILDINGS CLOSED/DEEP CLEANING:  Custodial personnel conducted sanitizing efforts this weekend. Starting Tuesday, the campus will be closed until March 31 except for designated essential personnel. After election day on March 17, the buildings will undergo deep cleaning. There will be at least one administrator in the building each week day during the closure.
  • BREAKFAST AND LUNCH AVAILABLE:  CPS will be providing three-day breakfast and lunch packets in front of school every week day starting March 17 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Further details were included in earlier CPS communications to all families.
Thank you for your patience as we work through these challenging times.  As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at any time at pjpowers@cps.edu or my direct office number 773-534-8606.

Sincerely,

P. Joseph Powers, Ph.D.
