Kia Ora Koutou,
We have been enjoying the fruits of our orchard this week! Yummy, crunchy apples have been enjoyed by all. Rooms 1 and 2 have also been making good use of the remaining potatoes in the vege garden to make wedges and potato pie! A big thank you to Renay (Koupa and Owen's dad) who has been coming over to school in his weekends or after work with a weedeater to help tame the orchard! I know you don't do it for the glory Renay, but we think you are a star, thank you!!
You will see above and further in the newsletter, photos of some of our children enjoying their weekly riding session; this is a wonderful programme which is currently experienced by 20 children throughout the school. They develop amazing skills, confidence, and connections with the horses they ride. A big thanks to our parents and teacher assistants who transport and supervise children each week!
Lost Property ... in need of owners - Lost property is well and truly over-flowing; there must be a lot of empty drawers and wardrobes out there! There is a big focus over last week and this week for the children on the importance of taking care of our belongings and environment - and what this looks like (hopefully a clear Lost Property area). Lost property will be on display each day this week ... anything still remaining by Friday will be scooped up for the Salvation Army shop.
COVID-19 Update - Our latest update from the Ministry of Education was received after school yesterday afternoon. As you are no doubt aware, the government has stepped up nationwide response in the 'Stamp it Out' phase of the national pandemic plan. There is a collective effort needed to flatten the potential growth curve of COVID-19 in NZ to help our health care system cope, and protect those in our society most at risk; the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. Bradford has a comprehensive pandemic plan and we continue to follow current advice from the Ministry of Health and Education which is updated regularly. Currently we:
- have stepped up all cleaning to pandemic guidelines
- followed advice of the Prime Minister to replace handshakes, hongi and hugs. At Bradford we are instead encouraging the 'east coast wave, or elbow bump'
- will avoid having the whole school together in one classroom space (advise from MOE last night states at assemblies there needs to be a 1.5m distance between each child, and 2m for those with a compromised immune system)
- continue to promote effective hand-washing techniques
- remind the children of the routines that ensure everyone washes their hands regularly and thoroughly
- promote safe ways to cover a sneeze or cough
- promote avoidance of touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- advise any staff or children who are unwell to stay at home until they are well again
- have procedures for dealing with children who become unwell at school, including ringing home immediately
- encourage everyone to get adequate sleep and balanced nutrition to ensure a healthy immune system
- anyone returning from overseas is required to self-isolate for 14 days (category 2 countries are exempt from this)
As a community we all have a part in slowing COVID-19 down, and if at all possible indeed 'stamping it out'. We do have students at Bradford with compromised immune systems or who are close to someone who has a compromised immune system. We ask that you are vigilant about keeping children home if they are showing signs of being unwell and if you are concerned seek medical advise.
The Ministry of Health website is updated regularly and is a reliable way of staying informed of current advice. This page link also gives useful information on signs, symptoms, prevention and travelling advice.
Please do not hesitate to ask any queries you may have in regards to this information.
Hot Cross Buns - A reminder orders are due back please by March 20th, thank you to everyone who is out there selling!

Active Transport to School
We encourage everyone to use Active Transport to school by walking or scootering. There are many great reasons to walk or scooter, including:
- better health
- exercise also helps learning readiness and focus,
- less congestion of cars
- better for the environment
Even being dropped up, or picked up from the bottom of the street has daily health benefits and really reduces congestion up near the school, which in turn helps safety. If children walk up or down the left hand foot path (when looked down from the school) there are no roads to cross until they get to Genelg Street. Whānau could make a set spot to drop off / pick up, where your child knows to walk to meet you.
