Telemedicine
and Self-Care
These are no doubt extraordinary times in which we find ourselves with the announcement of a worldwide pandemic of COVID-19, aka the coronavirus. I have been tracking this scenario carefully from a natural medicine perspective and am available for help in what many will experience as a difficult emotional and stressful time. I will continue to be available in-office for treatment visits, but I want to remind you all that I am also available via phone or video conference for all of you who are already established with me. High-end natural supplements are still available to be shipped directly to your door through my distributor at Wellevate. Contact me directly at drchristopher@mac.com for an invitation to sign up.
To be clear, a pandemic concerns the number of people and countries affected by a sustained disease, not the severity of the illness. An excellent and current review of what we know about COVID-19 from Emerson Ecologics, LLC suggests that most people who contract the virus will only have mild symptoms. These may include fever, muscle aches and uncomplicated upper respiratory symptoms such as cough, sore throat, nasal congestion and headache. Pregnant women do not appear to be at higher risk than the general population and there have been no reports of deaths in children aged 0-9. The exceptions seized upon by media sources need to be dealt with on a case-by-case basis and for these I am only a phone call away.
Now is the time to review self-care for you and your family. I invite you to continue to practice the basics of staying healthy through any viral outbreak, be it the coronavirus, seasonal flu or food-borne illness:
- Of course, wash your hands. A grandmother patient of mine recommends two times through the birthday song, which equates to about 30 seconds.
- Minimize contact with others, especially those with obvious symptoms.
- Drink plenty of fresh, clean water
- Get enough sleep
- Eat reasonably with plenty of fruits and veggies, being mindful of overall sugar, caffeine and alcohol intake which in excess will suppress the immune system.
- Utilize sweat therapy such as a sauna. There is great evidence regarding the immune, cardiovascular and relaxation benefits of both traditional Finnish and Infra-Red sauna therapy. I have good expertise here.
- Take appropriate herbs or supplements. There are many natural medicine considerations which are best left to tailored medical advice.
I understand that current physical issues and problems can get worse during a crisis. I am available to help you with both your established concerns and new health challenges. Please let me know how I can be of service to you and your family.
Best,
Dr. Lepisto
