Preventing & Managing the Spread of COVID-19 Within Domestic Violence Programs
In an effort to strengthen the capacity of individuals and organizations serving domestic violence survivors and their children, the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence (NRCDV) has compiled resources that offer helpful guidance for domestic violence programs preparing for and responding to the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) (as well as survivors who may be quarantined in their homes). A wealth of information and recommendations have been developed and made widely available by the National Network to End Domestic Violence, Futures Without Violence, National Health Center for the Homeless Council, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that can be adapted and used by community-based domestic violence programs.

During this challenging time, we should remain mindful of individuals and communities with limited or no access to affordable healthcare, safe and stable housing, financial security, nutritious meals, daycare, reliable transportation, connection to social support, etc. It’s important to remember survivors often hold low-wage jobs and unstable work, and many of these positions have limited to no benefits, insecure futures, or have been eliminated all together. There are also large segments of our population in fear of their safety, not only at home but in accessing life-saving services in their communities. Domestic violence programs should explore resources within and outside of their communities to respond to the needs of those most impacted by policies and practices that further social inequalities.

Additionally, in this time when social distancing, self-quarantine and intentional isolation are being promoted as key strategies to flatten the curve (reduce the prevalence of COVID-19 in our communities), it’s important that we remember home is not always a safe place, and magnify the importance of community care when it comes to cultivating resilience in the face of hardship.
The National Resource Center on Domestic Violence believes in the power of individuals, families, and communities to heal and thrive. We will continue to share resources and guidance to support each other and cultivate hope, healing, and well-being for all.
