New Federal Coronavirus Bill Waives Medicare Telehealth Restrictions

Medicare patients seeking certain medical services—including mental health services—can now be seen using live videoconferencing in their homes. They do not need to travel to a qualifying “originating site” for Medicare telehealth encounters, regardless of geographic location, according to a guidance issued this week by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Arizona Enacts Law Aimed at Addressing Teen Suicide Through Increases to Mental Health Services

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey signed a bill aimed at reducing the state’s suicide rate by increasing funding for mental health treatment for children and teens. The measure requires insurers to cover mental health and substance use disorders on par with physical health care. Read more.

Michigan To Create A Statewide 24/7 Mental Health Hotline

A bill to create a 24/7 crisis and access line for people in need of immediate mental health services in Michigan was signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Read more.

SAMHSA’s Crisis Services Toolkit is Designed to Help States, Counties, and Communities Plan and Achieve Effective and Cost-Effective Crisis Services

The crisis services toolkit issued last week by SAMHSA, National Guidelines for Mental Health Crisis Care, seeks to help states, counties, communities, and providers save lives and dollars by helping them to use a systematic, best practices approach to estimating the crisis system resource needs of each community. CMS Takes Action Nationwide to Respond to Coronavirus National Emergency

Last week, the President announced aggressive actions and regulatory flexibilities to help healthcare providers and states respond to and contain the spread of 2019 Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19).

The President’s declaration empowers the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) to authorize CMS to take proactive steps through 1135 waivers and rapidly expand the Administration’s aggressive efforts against COVID-19 led by the White House Coronavirus Task Force. Learn more.

NIH Request for Information Inviting Comments and Suggestions on a Framework for the NIH-Wide Strategic Plan for FYs 2021-2025

The purpose of the NIH-Wide Strategic Plan is to communicate how NIH will advance its mission to support research in pursuit of fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems, and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability. New ADHD Clinical Guidelines Recommend Psychosocial Supports As Essential Treatment, In Addition To Medication

New clinical guidelines call strongly for providing psychosocial supports for children and adolescents with complex attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Developed by the Society for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics (SDBP), the guideline provides a framework for diagnosing and treating complex ADHD in these age groups. Read more.

Suicide Accounted For 31% Of Jail Deaths & 6% Of Prison Deaths In 2016

From 2006 to 2016, suicide was the leading single cause of death in local jails each year; it accounted for nearly a third of jail deaths in 2016 (31%). Read more.

Young Adults With Type 1 Diabetes Are Three Times More Likely To Attempt Suicide

Young adults, aged 15 to 25 years, with type 1 diabetes (T1D) are three times more likely to attempt suicide than young adults without diabetes. Read more.

Alcohol Use Disorder Is Significant Risk Factor for Suicide, Study Finds

Even after accounting for additional psychiatric diagnoses, people with alcohol use disorder (AUD) have a substantially increased risk of dying by suicide, according to a study of the Swedish population published in AJP in Advance. Read more.

Digital Monitoring, Motivational Coaching May Decrease Depression in Older Bereaved Adults

The death of a spouse can disrupt routine daily activities, such as sleeping and eating, and increase risk of mood disorders, such as major depressive disorder (MDD). A small study published in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry suggests that an intervention combining digital monitoring and motivational coaching may help older bereaved adults to better track and improve their sleeping, eating, and physical activity. Meta-Analysis Spotlights Challenge of Physician Suicide

The risk of suicide among physicians who are women appears to be higher than women in the general population, according to a meta-analysis appearing in JAMA Psychiatry. In contrast, men who are physicians appear to have lower suicide rates than men in the general population. Read more.
