WHAT I LEARNED FROM MY LAST BLOG!

Firstly, it was my most read piece since I started blogging about design and retail almost four years ago...so a huge thank you to you...my readers. I think it's because it was more to the point, and shorter.  We'll see if I'm right.  I'll try to do that more often.

Secondly, it immediately resulted in design consultations...which is wonderful, as people trust that I will help them achieve their goals.

Thirdly - AND REALLY AN EYE-OPENER - one of the clients told me that they didn't realize that I worked with smaller retailers, thinking that I only worked with large clients..until they saw the work I did with the hair salon colour make-over.  To clarify that...I work mostly with independent retailers and not multi-chains.

There is a huge benefit to being an independent retailer...you can make immediate changes to your environment. There is no 'higher up person/s' to check if you can make changes!

LETS LOOK AT THE CASH DESK POSITION
At a recent consultation one of the things that became apparent is that the cash desk was likely in the wrong place .  Let's look at my simple sketch.

On the left image you can see where the cash desk is located. Behind it is approximately 8' of wall space.

8' of wall space = 200 garments

By moving the desk to the red area...we now gain that valuable selling space on the wall, and...eliminate 200 garments from the floor!  Imagine! More floor space on an overcrowded floor?

Then by placing the new desk in front of a blank wall, you get the opportunity to highlight that area...perhaps with a  branding message, a gorgeous mural,  your logo or your company name.  Then, with some great lighting fixtures over the desk, you now have a clear focal point from the front door.

This is not always a clear situation.  There are many variables. I.e. width of space, dressing room location, sight lines etc...
