We must look out for each other in these terrible times 

Hatcham was mentioned in the 1086 Domesday book when it was home to just 9 people and pigs ran through our tiny forests. Our Tenant-in-chief was Bishop Odo of Bayeaux (the half-brother of William the Conqueror) and we were classed as being in Surrey. Hatcham has survived and thrived since then and we will overcome what threatens us now – but we must help others in our community who might be isolated and feeling frightened.

In the past few days, I’ve checked in on elderly Hatchmites whom I first met during our various meetings against Sainsburys. I made sure to stand at least two metres away from them after they answered the door. If you are healthy and have the resources, please check in on your vulnerable neighbours. It’s a terrifying time for them and they would appreciate a friendly and familiar face.

Keep in mind you must take necessary precautions if you do run errands. Best practice is to pretend that you are an asymptomatic carrier of the virus and if passing items to vulnerable people make sure it’s been sanitised thoroughly with anti-bacterial wipes or bleach. You don’t want to be a part of the problem.
 
There are a lot of groups popping up to help the elderly and vulnerable but where possible it’s always better to volunteer through established bodies such as through the council or the local foodbank. This is to prevent any data breaches or further risks to vulnerable people through lack of training. There have sadly already been reports throughout London of pensioners having had their money stolen after being promised a shop. Times like these can really bring out the worst in a select few….
