Hi all. As I’m sure most of you are, all WalkBoston staff are working remotely, spending time with their families, walking their dogs, and trying to stay calm. We are staying connected as a team with daily video calls and are continuing to weigh in on public development projects. We have dusted off the long list of projects that we never have time to do and are trying to use our time wisely.

We also have a plan to send you positive news and walking inspiration in an email every Wednesday with a Keep Walking newsletter. See below for our first edition, and opt-in here to receive it in the future. Stay in touch. Be well.

"Walking is among the most life-affirming of human activities. It is the way we organize space and orient ourselves to the world at large. It is the living proof that repetition -- placing one foot in front of the other -- can in fact allow a person to make meaningful progress. It is no coincidence that parents celebrate their child's first steps -- the first, and perhaps the greatest, sign of independence."
- John Kaag, Hiking With Nietzsche

What we've been reading & watching:

  • WBUR shared tips on how to find structure right now, and walking plays a part: "One way to make the mental shift in and out of your workday is to simulate a daily commute. Get dressed, take a walk around the block and arrive back at work. When work is over, change into your loungewear, take a walk around the block and arrive home. (It’s a lot of walking around the block, but the signal it sends to your brain, and to others, works!)"
  • The MA Dept. of Conservation and Recreation is sharing photos and videos on Instagram of state parks that remain open to inspire you to get outside -- or at the very least, give you a dose of nature content.
  • Boston area residents are organizing mutual aid resources to support neighbors and communities; look for opportunities to help in your local area.
  • A helpful video from author Max Brooks and his father, Mel Brooks.
That's it for this week, we'll see you next Wednesday morning. This is a work in progress, so let us know what you'd like to see.
