Updates on Staying Healthy & Safe
Volume #2 - Issue #4
Pilates for everyBODY...
We believe that Pilates is for everyBODY and one of our missions is to bring that reality to as many people as we can across the US and then around the globe.
As we all continue to monitor the situation closely, we wanted to reach out and share some additional suggestions for increasing your actions to keep your studios safe and clean for you, your staff, and the community.

We understand that as health and fitness professionals, it is our duty to be informed,  proactive, and to support the broader community with physical and mental well-being.

As a reminder, maintaining good health is the best defense, and staying active is essential to optimizing your health.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW:
We want to remind you that the best defense against viruses, in addition to specific preventive measures, is to maintain an overall healthy lifestyle that includes regular physical activity.

The good news—so far—is that sweat cannot transmit the virus, and there’s a lower risk of picking up coronavirus at a fitness studio than at a church service, according to David Thomas, MD, MPH, professor of medicine and director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (The New York Times, March 8, 2020).

SUGGESTED PREVENTATIVE MEASURES
Based on the best public health practices, we suggest the following:
  • Abide by all governmental rules & requirements for businesses on dealing with the virus.
  • Step up routine cleaning of frequently touched surfaces. Clean anything and everything that staff, trainers, and clients commonly touch—for example, doorknobs, handrails, light switches, handles, water dispenser, fridge, toilets, faucets, sinks, lockers, benches, equipment, computers, keyboards, headsets, microphones, ipads and music remote controls, and all desks. We suggest twice a day to disinfect surfaces with hospital-grade solutions.
  • Ask that everyone wash their hands or sanitize BEFORE taking a class. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water for 20 seconds to kill any viruses on your hands.
  • Make sure to have all staff members clean their hands frequently.
  • Provide disposable disinfectant cleaning wipes.
  • Make sure staff  avoids hands-on contact with clients. Avoid handshakes or other close-contact greetings. Instructors should make adjustments to form or alignment verbally without direct physical contact.
  • Floor Mats: No use of workout mats unless a towel is used.
WHAT CLIENTS CAN DO:
We recommend  that effective immediately, our community does the following:
  • Ask that each client bring a full-sized (bath or beach) towel for a barrier on mats.
  • Wash their hands before and after classes or use hand sanitizer.
  • Do  not attend classes if you are not feeling well. stay home.

* * STAY HEALTHY * *
What we do know is that physical activity may help flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways. This may reduce your chance of getting a cold, flu, or other illness.
Get as much sunshine as you can each day.
The brief rise in body temperature during and right after exercise may prevent bacteria from growing. This temperature rise may help the body fight infection better.
Exercise is right for all of us. Even if you don’t feel comfortable going into a studio please be sure to move each and every day.
Exercise makes you feel healthier and more energetic.
Stay active! You will feel better and healthier for it.

SUGGESTIONS FOR EQUIPMENT & STUDIO CLEANING:
•You can use a cleaner made of 5 parts (tablespoons) of bleach to one quart of water. It can be sprayed on and wired off.  We suggest that after using any type of harsh cleaner on upholstery or other surfaces that you then go over those surfaces with a water and white vinegar solution to remove any residual cleanser, which will protect your clients from harsh chemical build-up as well as protect the upholstery from premature break-down.
•Sticky pads can not be cleaned well or at all esp. if they are the waffle-style Rubbermaid type. Gorilla Grip drawer liners work better and can be cleaned and sanitized easily.

We know that everyone’s business will be affected by this virus, some more than others.

•Be as prepared as you can be, stay on top of any news—re: government programs that could assist your business during this national emergency. Your CPA will be a good source as is your local chamber of commerce or municipal government.

•Hold off on any large expenditures for your business and economize or reduce your expenses as much as possible.

•Try to take advantage of online resources as much as possible—such as online class platforms, etc.

•Support your community whenever possible—volunteer if you are able. When things calm down, offer some community classes to those in need and who cannot afford to work out.

It takes a village to overcome the pandemic challenge in front of us!

Please don't hesitate to contact us if you need any assistance.
