Kia ora Kāpiti

Work's started on an exciting new temporary mural at Waikanae Library, the Kāpiti Gateway Centre has progressed to business case, and we have an important message about driving and swimming around launching boats. Grab a cuppa and read about what's coming up.

Driving on beach

We caught up with Coops from Kapiti Island Eco last week for a chat about keeping safe in the boat launching and retrieval areas. Don’t swim too close to these areas, as boats are coming and going constantly, and visibility can be poor. And remember that launch areas aren’t carparks or roads – don’t park or drive behind a reversing vessel. Just because you can see them coming, it doesn’t mean they can see you!

Kāpiti Gateway Centre

Improving the Kāpiti Island departure point and providing a memorable visitor experience has been a discussion point for our community for many years. A Gateway Centre would enable more robust measures to meet today’s biosecurity threats, and allow us to better communicate the unique stories and history of our area, and help promote tourism for the wider district. In June 2019, we began updating the feasibility of building a Kāpiti Gateway Centre at Paraparaumu Beach.  Read more about the Kāpiti Gateway Centre on our website.

Parks Week wrap-up

Parks Week 2020, our annual celebration of the important role parks play in our lives, was a great success, with the initially average weather transforming to brilliant Kāpiti sunshine when we needed it most!

Thanks to all our co-hosts, supporters and residents who came out to enjoy events around Kāpiti; our big finale was Park to Path – a great Sunday morning out enjoying our amazing parks and trails in the sunshine!

We had a fabulous week, with activities from yoga to tai chi – and still have the rescheduled Putiputi in the Park to look forward to on 24 March! Check out the details, and join us.

Waikanae Library mural

A new temporary mural will be appearing on Waikanae Library over the coming weeks, celebrating world-renowned New Zealand artist Frances Hodgkins. By local artists Kate Hartmann and Ruth Robertson-Taylor, the mural will show Hodgkins and two of her textile designs, adding vibrancy to the recently rejuvenated Mahara Place, and showcasing an important part of Kāpiti’s artistic heritage.

Scaffolding will be in place for several weeks while the work is completed, but won't impede access to Mahara Place.

Fancy a cuppa for Neighbours Day?

Neighbours Day Aotearoa strengthens relationships and can make your community better prepared during times of need. They are small gatherings of any form – from beach cleanups to a simple cuppa over the fence. You can still register up until 20 March to host a get-together. You'll receive a pack with resources from the Council, and ideas for a supportive neighbourly event.  Visit Neigbhours Day to register.

The Ministry of Health is best placed for the latest advice on events and mass gatherings. We are keeping an eye on the situation and will update you if things change.

COVID-19

Earlier this week, the Government announced that all public events or mass gatherings where 500 or more people are together in one place at one time should be cancelled. This includes festivals, fairs, sporting, religious and cultural events.

We understand there's a lot of concern in our community about COVID-19, and it's important to ensure you stay well informed and support those in our community who are unwell or are taking responsible steps to protect themselves and others.
