TERM 1 - WEEK 8 - 2020
From the Principal's Desk

Respect for Self, Respect for Others, Skills for Life
I have made reference in earlier editions of our Newsletter that for education to be authentic, its primary function must be the holistic develop of the individual. Our school mottos of Respect for Self, Respect for Others, Skills for Life reflect the endeavor of our College and our holistic purpose. In the current situation of the Coronavirus Epidemic it can be challenging to look for positives and find ways in which our students can learn from the situation. But as is often the case with challenges, if we support one another and manage the situation as best we can, we can learn lessons that can make us better individuals into the future.

Last week I was fortunate enough to be at a conference, where Bishop Greg Homeming was speaking, about leadership and during his talk he also mentioned how we gain an interesting insight into the character of people in difficult times. The incidents of panic or bulk buying are a perfect example of this. Authorities have reassured us that there is enough of everything to go around, yet some members of the community cannot see past their own needs, which impacts on the rest of the community.

The current situation and some of the incidents of recent weeks have made me reflect on the second of our mottos, Respect for Others. Respecting others requires, understanding, acceptance and selflessness. An understanding of the needs of others, an acceptance of the fact that my own needs may not be as important as others and selfless enough to not pursue our own needs or desires to the detriment of others.

Making change in the world starts with each individual. As a community, if we truly value the concept of respecting others and develop this skill in one another, we can go a long way towards creating the understanding, acceptance and selflessness that can help the whole community, particularly those in the most need in our communities. Now, perhaps more than ever, we have the opportunity to help our students recognise and understand that there are many people, particularly the elderly, who have greater needs than our own. If we are able to do that, when we emerge from this challenge, we may well have young men and women who are more sensitive to the needs of others and more developed individuals themselves.

Workplace Learning
Congratulations to all of the Year 11 students who were able to complete their first block placement this week. There is no doubt that having the opportunity to learn in the workplace is real-life or real-world learning but possibly never more so than this week. The reality is that not all students could be in the workplace this week because of the nature of their placement or the impact the Coronavirus has already had on employers.

This week has been the most realistic insight into how situations outside of an employer’s control can impact on their business and our students have seen this reality firsthand. Whilst we would never want any of our wonderful employers to be negatively impacted by what is happening, the fact is that it is happening and it is important that students reflect on their experiences of this week and develop a better understanding of the challenges employers face, particularly those running small business. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Have a great weekend.

Student Services News

Hello Newman family in what has been a very busy Week 8.  Year 11 experienced their first taste of workplacement and all reports from visiting teachers have been overwhelmingly positive. Reports back from many students is that they have gained casual work from their employer, which is a true indication of how successful and beneficial  the Workplace Learning Program is.

Within our church, we are in the Holy time of Lent, 26 February to 9 April. Lent is the period of 40 days which comes before Easter in the Christian calendar. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, Lent is a season of reflection and preparation before the celebrations of Easter. By observing the 40 days of Lent, Christians replicate Jesus Christ's sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days. Lent is marked by fasting, both from food and festivities.

Whereas Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus after his death on the cross, Lent recalls the events leading up to and including Jesus' crucifixion by Rome. This is believed to have taken place in Roman occupied Jerusalem.

The Christian churches that observe Lent in the 21st century (and not all do significantly) use it as a time for prayer and penance. Only a small number of people today fast for the whole of Lent, although some maintain the practice on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. It is more common these days for believers to surrender a particular vice such as favourite foods or smoking. Whatever the sacrifice, it is a reflection of Jesus' deprivation in the wilderness and a test of self-discipline. As we move towards Easter, perhaps this is a time where we can use Lent to remind us all how lucky we are and to look after each other in a time of uncertainty

Introducing The Future Hub & Student Job Board

Our careers office has a new look and is now known as The Pathways & Careers Team located in The Future Hub. They are determined to provide students, families, employers and staff with innovative, relevant and professional services that help to deliver positive outcomes for all.

THE FUTURE HUB
With the ever changing needs of our students and the services provided by the Newman careers team we felt it was time for an update. So we have created a logo and named our work space The Future Hub.

Why The Future Hub?
Well it’s all about the student and where they’re headed ie: The future and it’s a centre around which other things revolve or from which they radiate - the central part of this ever spinning wheel that is Newman, ie the Hub. So from this day forward the team upstairs will now be referred to as The Pathways & Careers Team located at The Future Hub - same great location, same great service - just a different name.

THE NEWMAN STUDENT JOB BOARD
The Newman Student Job Board is now up and running! You can visit it directly via the link:  Job Board or just google it! The Student Job Board is located on the College website and makes it easy for students and parents to see what’s available for students in our area and abroad.

This is where you can find all the latest jobs that come directly and exclusively to our College as well as advertised jobs that we think are relevant to Newman students. Along with this our Facebook and Instagram pages will post reminders when there are updates, but you can google it at any time.

Business Services News

Year 11 have made a wonderful start to the year completing their unit on contributing to workplace health and safety. Never more apt than right now and the current situation we all find ourselves in with the increased focus on our own health and the health of those around us.

Currently, learning for Year 11 is focused on electronic communication in business including, among other areas, what sort of language is appropriate for professional communication and which method of communication should be used in different situations. We have also looked at different ways to connect with colleagues via distance, again very timely. Students will engage in video conferencing software upon their return from workplacement. Through experiencing this in the classroom they will be better prepared should we need to shift to a distance learning model.

Year 12 are currently learning about the importance of records, archiving, organising tasks and confidentiality, all key components of any career in business. They are now drawing very close to the end of their course so need encouragement to not take their foot off the pedal. It is still important for them to submit assessment tasks on time so they do not pile up at the end of Term 3.

Finally, as we draw to a close on block week placements for both year groups I’d like to thank all businesses that have supported our students. It’s through you that our students are able to experience what working in the industry is truly like and this experience is invaluable.

The Pathways & Careers Team News

Some students have had their workplacement/SbAT postponed due to risk of COVID-19.

Please note that at this stage we are not currently giving the students a new workplacement due to the COVID-19 situation.

Under those circumstances a student is not required to attend College on a workplacement day unless they are a 2 day Trainee/Apprentice and can attend school on their timetabled day. In those circumstances, students would be expected to be working on school related work from home.
