Hello SCWIST Community,
As an evidenced-based policy focused organization in STEM, SCWIST is closely following updates from PHAC, BCCDC and WHO (all credible scientific sources). Based on scientifically informed announcements, we are monitoring a novel coronovirus disease (COVID-19) and taking precautionary measures to minimize the risk and protect the safety of our members and community.
While stressful seeing the emotional and economic toll on society, scrolling past the inflaming click-bait and misinformation, and knowing real people are sick and dying… I have been heartend that there is a rapid, drastic, global response to an issue raised by the scientific community, the number of credible sources that are available for good information, that in trusting the science we have put health before the economy, and that communities are pulling together to help each other including with social distancing.
The SCWIST team, including a Phd in immunology on our board (!), and I would like to update you with the following regarding our events and programs and to share a few reliable evidence-based resources.

At this time we are monitoring the changing situation and following risk-informed decision making guidelines from the Public Health Authority of Canada. With specific updates for upcoming in-person events, as follows:
If this changes, updates will be provided on our website and attendees will be emailed. We are taking precautions at events and making modifications by not having shared food platters, an overview of safety measures in opening remarks, and discouraging hand-shaking and close sitting/standing.
-
Our adult mentoring and skills exchange program, Make Possible, is continuing; however, we recommend getting connected over email, phone and video chat rather than in-person.
-
The SCWIST Resource Centre, for tools, questions and support for women and girls in STEM, is available virtually via web and email

We can do the following to slow the spread of infection (“flatten the curve”):
-
If you do not feel well, are displaying cold or flu-like symptoms or have been in close contact with someone that is ill or is suspected / infected with COVID-19, we encourage you to take care of yourself and not to attend SCWIST and other events
-
In general, stay away from events of over 250 participants
-
Self-isolate for 14 days after a return from travel outside of Canada
