Hello SHC Friends,

We hope that you and your loved ones are remaining safe. In these unsettling times, as we do our best to quickly adapt to the situation, we want to stop and take a moment to express our sincere appreciation for your generous support as friends and volunteers in our community. Your support is humbling and your belief in our mission inspires us to double down and work even harder for the refugee and immigrant families in our communities.

What SHC volunteers and staff do on a daily basis is to connect on a very personal level with people who are often not visible in our society.  Many families we work with are already in a state of social isolation, and SHC programs are designed to be a bridge between isolated families and local community resources. The Coronavirus has challenged us to develop new ways of building these bridges. We want to share with you how SHC has responded to the challenge.

  1. SHC Staff:  We will continue to pay staff as planned for the reminder of our current Winter class session. All paid staff, including adult ESL teachers and our two childcare development teachers, former refugees themselves, have been given remote assignments.

  2. SHC Tutors and Volunteers: We are encouraging tutors to continue contact with students through messaging and video chat platforms. Starting tomorrow we will hold weekly web conference meetings via Zoom to answer questions about using technology to tutor remotely, and to give suggestions about how to conduct virtual tutoring sessions. We will also continue to recruit new tutors to work remotely with our students and all Tutor Workshops and Information Sessions will take place via Zoom.

  3. SHC Classes: This week SHC teachers are creating short lessons using photos, videos and voice recordings to share with students via Whats App. Throughout the Winter term, we successfully used Whats App to communicate with our classroom students, giving them homework or sending notifications about classes. The Spring term we will also upload recorded lessons to the SHC YouTube channel so lessons can be viewed remotely by students who are not in our Whats App groups.

  4. SHC Families: SHC families are never from our thoughts, so we will continue to check in on them via messaging in lieu of in person visits and share information and helpful resources throughout closures and quarantines.

Thank you for your continued support of SHC. We would not be here today without your support.
