COVID-19 NEWS AND UPDATES >>

At Technion, we have learned through experience that in times of crisis, our greatest strength lies in our togetherness. Today, we are required to meet isolation, quarantine, insecurity and fear, with community, communication, and a deep commitment to the wellbeing of each other.

For this reason, we will be sending you, as a member of the Technion family, frequent scientific, community and resource updates direct from Technion Israel. This information comes from across the spectrum of leadership, laboratory research and our medical faculty.

In this first mail, you will hear directly from Technion President Prof. Uri Sivan, Dean of Undergraduate Studies Prof. Hossam Haick and Infectious Disease Expert Dr. Yael Shachor-Meyouhas of the Rappaport Medical Faculty and Deputy Director of the Rappaport Children's Hospital at the Rambam Health Care Campus.

Please feel free to share these issues of Technion LIVE with all who you feel may benefit.

COVID-19:

Why do young people respond differently?

On the frontline of treating past, present and future carriers of the COVID-19 in Israel, Technion professor Dr. Yael Shachor-Meyouhas is an Attending Physician in Infectious Diseases at Rambam Health Care Campus and Deputy Director of Ruth Rappaport Children’s Hospital. According to her, young people may hold the key to this any many other future viruses.

“We didn’t see any mortality in Italy so far in patients under the age of 29,” she says. “It’s amazing, because it’s different from many other viruses. After we perform those clinical studies, we can go back to the laboratories at Technion - and we have many - and we can learn about this virus and many other viruses, and then we can go back to the clinical field and see if we can find a drug or even a vaccine for this virus and many other viruses that can cause a severe illness.”

“Here at Rambam, we treat those patients in isolation using new technology - telehealth and telemedicine - and I think the Technion is a great platform for using those technologies and to help us develop those technologies to help us contain the Coronavirus outbreak,” says Dr. Shachor-Meyouhas.

The Hybrid Approach to Online Learning

“The tools that we have enabled during this challenging period will also continue beyond this period as a part of the teaching system at Technion, because I do believe that an integration between the conventional approach of learning and digital learning and teaching will bring many advantages.”

Speaking from self-quarantine, Prof. Hossam Haick, Dean of Undergraduate Studies at Technion, explains what steps are being taken to turn the challenge of digital education during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic into an opportunity.
