Coronavirus and lungs: How do smoking, vaping, air pollution affect respiratory illnesses?

Smoking could definitely have an impact on whether people get the coronavirus and how fast they recover, experts say. There’s little research on this yet, but there are some preliminary theories. A study of COVID-19 cases showed that smoking status was a factor in COVID-19 progression into pneumonia. And experts at the University of California, San Francisco, state that a potential reason that more men are dying than women of the disease in China is because more men than women smoke there.

British American Tobacco circumventing ad ban, experts say

British American Tobacco (BAT) is marketing e-cigarettes and heated cigarettes with pictures of attractive models and using hashtags such as “I dare you to try it”, despite a crackdown last year after it paid social media influencers to promote its products. In the UK the Advertising Standards Authority banned e-cigarette-makers from paying influencers to promote their products on Instagram. After the ban, Facebook and Instagram both announced in December that they would no longer allow influencers to promote tobacco or e-cigarettes.

Young adults vape without knowing what's in their e-cigarettes

A new study shows that young adults often use e-cigarettes without being aware of what is in them or which brand they are using. The study, published online in March 2020 in the Journal of Adolescent Health, raises concerns about the labeling and regulation of vaping products. The researchers looked at 445 participants in California, aged 17 to 24 years, who were using pod-based devices, about what was in the pods. The questions included specific queries about various products from leading manufacturers like Juul, Suorin Drop, Phix, and Myblu.

Vaping Increases the Risk of Developing Infections

A new study recently conducted by researchers from the New York University (NYU) College of Dentistry looks at the effects of using e-cigarettes or ‘vaping‘ on the oral health of a person. More specifically, it highlights that the use of a vape or e-cigarettes may not only be harmful to the health of the lungs but also for dental health as it increases the risk of infections of the teeth and gums by altering the oral microbiome.
