IBGVR monthly update: Hunkering down

We're sheltering from the coronavirus like everyone else but still working hard on the phone and online to take the Initiative for Better Gun Violence Reporting to new levels when we all resurface. Here's the latest:

Another newsroom adopts resource sharing

Prompted by mothers who lost children to gun violence, several Philadelphia new organizations began sharing resource lists when reporting on shootings last fall and now CBS Philadelphia has joined the movement.

RJI extends IBGVR founder's fellowship

We're even more grateful now to the Reynolds Journalism Institute at the University of Missouri because IBGVR founder Jim MacMillan has been invited to extend his fellowship for another six months. MacMillan will conclude his residential responsibilities in April and continue working from back home in Philadelphia.

Promising partnerships

We're still working on details but upcoming newslettters will have more information on exciting and important engagements with some of the nation's leading news organizations. Plans are underway for another event this summer and we're also in talks with possible funders and host organizations that we hope will enable expanded programming in the future. Stay tuned.

Rescheduling Reframe

Due to the emerging pandemic, organizers postponed Reframe: Changing the Conversation about Gun Violence in America last week in New York City. IBGVR founder Jim MacMillan has been invited to speak as originally planned when the event is eventually rescheduled.

The Initiative for Better Gun Violence Reporting has been created to inform a new set of best practices for journalists reporting on gun violence and to explore the hypothesis that changing the way this issue is covered could prevent shooting incidents and save lives.
