Class of 2023 Guidance &
Distance Learning Update

March 2020
 
Hello parents! First of all, I hope you and your families are staying healthy and well. We are all navigating this unprecedented time in different ways, and I recognize that your child's education may be just one of the multiple things you're juggling right now. My goal is to provide as much help and information as possible, and hopefully to ease some anxiety and stress about how we're going to move forward in a distance learning setting. I thank you in advance for your patience, as we are all figuring out how to operate under these circumstances. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out!

Distance Learning
On or before Wednesday, April 1st, your child will be contacted by their 1st period teacher. The purpose of this contact is to make sure we have correct contact information, as well as verifying that all students have a chromebook, internet access, and food assistance if needed. If they do not receive a call by Friday, April 3rd, please call the front office to update your contact information - 850-475-5257. 

Students should be checking their Google Classrooms, Core LMS Dashboards, and ECSD email accounts for direction on how to access assignments for each of their classes. It is my understanding that students will be assigned 4 hours of combined work per day (approximately 34 minutes per class), and they can complete it at their own pace. If your child has questions about individual classes, they should reach out to their teacher directly.

Counselor Office Hours and Contact
The district has given a temporary Google Voice number to all staff members that will be accessible until May 7, 2020 (This is subject to change). My Google Voice number and office hours are below. Students and parents are also welcome to email me at anytime - eglidden@ecsdfl.us. All freshmen students should also be enrolled in the "Wildcats Class of 2023" Google Classroom - the code is z7izefj. The online appointment request form that was located on the Google Classroom and BTWHS website will be closed while school is out of session.

  • Office Hours: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9 am - 11 am
2020-2021 School Year Course Registration
  • Prior to spring break, I met with students who have the following English 1 teachers: Mrs. Braswell, Ms. Edge, and Mr. Smith. If your student has one of those teachers, but did not meet with me due to absences, I will be reaching out to them individually to finalize their requests. Please make sure your student is checking their ECSD email.
  • For students who have Ms. Wadsworth, Ms. Provau, or Mr. Wyman for English 1, I will be reaching out to them according to the schedule below. Please make sure your student is checking their ECSD email.
    • April 1st-3rd - Ms. Wadsworth
    • April 6th-10th - Mr. Wyman
    • April 13th-17th - Ms. Provau
  • In order to check your child's course requests, follow the steps below:
    • Log onto their Focus Account (or your parent account)
    • Change the year in the upper right hand corner to 2020-2021 (This will turn the top of the screen red)
    • Click on the "My Information" menu (A small backpack symbol, located on either the top or left hand side of the screen)
    • Click on "Class Requests"
  • To view the 2020-2021 10th grade course request card, click here.
  • The deadline to change 2020-2021 course requests is May 29, 2020.
Night School
  • The second session of night school will still be taking place. I will send an email with additional information once the details are finalized. If your child did not fail any classes during the fall semester, you can disregard that email update.
BTWHS Building Access
  • Most BTWHS staff members will be working remotely until school opens again. If you need to go to the school building (i.e. for medication from the clinic), you must call the main office first - 850-475-5257. Visitors will be subject to screening before entering the building.
  • The Book Room will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12 - 2 pm.
Community Service Books
  • We still have not received the updated community service books. In light of this and the current distance learning environment, I will accept individual proposals, reflections, and logs for hours performed in the 2019-2020 school year. These pages can be inserted into the community service books once they are received.
  • You can access the district's community service packet here. Please note, the packet says that the "Bright Futures Community Service Proposal" form must be submitted to me for approval prior to performing service work. For our current situation, I will approve/deny community service opportunities via email, and paperwork can be signed at a later date. Students can scan or take a picture of the completed proposal form and email it to eglidden@ecsdfl.us. 
Student Resources & Information
  • Food Distribution - For the list of expanded district food pickup sites, click here. Please note, there will be no food pick up on Friday, April 10th, as it was previously scheduled to be a non-student day. Hours for pickup at BTWHS are 9 am - 12 pm. 
  • Feeding the Gulf Coast - Free service that provides assistance with groceries and meals. Visit their website here.
  • United Way 211 - Free service which provides confidential information and referrals for those who need help with food, housing, employment, health care, counseling and more. Dial 2-1-1 or click here to visit the 2-1-1 website.
  • Internet Access - If you do not have internet access at home, please call Cox Communications at 1-800-234-3993.
  • Advanced Placement (AP) Testing - Students will be able to take their AP tests from home. For more information, please refer to the College Board Website here
  • Report Cards - Quarter 3 grades are in the process of being finalized, and 3rd quarter report cards will be distributed. The district is still working on the logistics for this process, so stay tuned for more information!
