March 2020: Rudolf Steiner's wisdom about epidemics and viruses
Dear people, last month I said that in March we would consider a very positive and really important scientific discovery from the 1970’s that confirms the existence of the ethers. But with the terrible global crisis caused by the Corona virus, it seems more appropriate now to share with you some key teachings from Rudolf Steiner on this general topic.
Obviously it is extremely important to protect ourselves and our fellow human beings from the Corona virus, in terms of hygiene and keeping a spatial distance from others. Rudolf Steiner added a ‘soul’ dimension to this need for vigilance; he taught that,
If during an epidemic, people go into sleep in a state of great fear, then, when our soul is out of the body, and in the spiritual world, this soul-state of fear provides a shelter for malignant entities, which physically or medically, are identified as viruses. (In other words we are more likely to be infected.)
But, if we go to into sleep with a compassionate feeling, thinking of how we can help society in such a crisis, then we actually set up a barrier in our aura against the malignant entities involved. (GA 261, lecture 9th May 1914.)
It is a primary point in anthroposophical medical knowledge that an illness arises in us from an imperfection or disturbance in our threefold human nature; and this brings about an unpleasant field of disharmony in the human being. Malignant entities (viruses) can be drawn into this unwholesome area in our soul and life-forces (or ‘etheric body’). Then the person’s condition becomes ‘infectious’.
He also explained that,
When people are unethical, for example, through lying, or speaking ill of others, or being deceitful and hypocritical, then, a species of unpleasant subtle, tenuous entities is created, and these have a tendency to draw near into human beings. Inside these weak, faint entities, a breeding ground is offered for those malignant beings we know as viruses or bacteria. (GA 98, Lecture 14th June 1908)

Throughout the wide expanse of space,
Many beings and objects speak to human sensing,
And become changed in the flow of time.
But the human soul, stirring itself from slumber,
– not hindered by the breadth of space,
nor touched by the cycles of time –
Awakens within the flow of Being and Becoming
In the Realm of Eternity.
