Good morning
Today is our 15th day sheltering in. A good time to turn to our bonsai.
Our indoor tropicals are thriving and require regular watering, misting and light fertilizing. Some also need to be moved away from hot widows as the intensity of the sun increases
Our winter hardy trees, mostly larches in Tie Pots* are still frozen, so it will be a few weeks before we can do anything with them.
Still, I regularly wander out and survey them, looking for signs of winter damage and also looking with an eye to improvement

Speaking of Shohin Bonsai
this lovely little Trident maple by Haruyosi is one of our favorites
|
|
|
Red on Red
speaking of Haruyosi
here's another favorite of his from a post we did last year
Red glazes are expensive and not that easy to do.
The tree is an Elaeagnus pungens
(Siverthorn in English, Kangumi in Japanese).

One more by Haruyosi
It's a Japanese quince (Chaenomeles speciosa)
The purity of color of quince flowers is almost unrivaled

Miyazato Rintaro posted these four small trees last year
Here's a strange machine translation for you if you enjoy such things... "For Sale. I'm going to give it to the net in the afternoon. This time, from mini bonsai to small pieces, We have a tree with sights. Please contact us"
Shohin means a small thing in Japanese and all four of these trees qualify. As mentioned, the translations are machine generated, and though they generally tend to be better than they were a couple years ago, they still have a ways to go (one year later, I've noticed marked improvement)

Just in case you missed our last post and newsletter...
This flowing muscular beast
is one of the most impressive Buttonwoods
we've seen in a while
by Nacho Marin

|
Another one from our last newsletter...
Here's what we wrote when we posted this tree back in 2018
The sheer power of this magnificent tree places it in elevated company. It's a 50cm (20") tall Ficus microcarpa by one of our favorite South American bonsai artists, Nacho Marin of Venezuela. The pot is by John Evans of the USA.

Ficus: The Exotic Bonsai by Jerry Meislik
This one-of-a-kind book is the real thing,
not a rehash of information gleaned from other bonsai books
but clear, practical advice on growing
and caring for your tropical Ficus bonsai
I've been wintering Ficus indoors for years
with only natural light from windows
as long as you don't let the soil get too hot
and too dry from southern sun
they take to indoors like fish to water

TIE POT SPECIAL
But first a quick review by Harry Harrington...
"While at The Trophy I managed to secure a supply of these
Tie-Pots, heavy duty bonsai training pots with a system of baffles and air holes that cause your developing trees to continually air-prune the roots.
This system helps produce very dense, fibrous root systems ready for a bonsai pot.
The baffles ensure that roots are forced out towards the air holes (unlike when using pond baskets or colanders), while providing excellent has exchange into the soil.
Although not quite as sturdy as mica, they will still last a long long time so are a good investment."
