Our “social distancing” has been extended to April 27, at the earliest. I have doubts it will be that soon. The disappointment in the cancellations of events at our schools – Holy Mass, sports seasons, the gala, the March Madness pool, socializing with friends, and even classes – is real. However, we cannot let these disappointments hold us back. We must turn this time into an opportunity to grow as students, teachers, and parents.
I hope you were able to watch Pope Francis give the extraordinary Urbi et Orbi (“to the city [of Rome] and to the world”) blessing this past Friday at St. Peter’s Cathedral in Rome. St. Peter’s, the largest church in the world was empty. Only Pope Francis, a handful of Cardinals, and the Blessed Sacrament were present. It was a powerful, magnificent hour of prayer for the world and for the end of the scourge of the Coronavirus. If you haven’t seen it, I recommend you watch it.
“How many people every day are exercising patience and offering hope, taking care not to sow panic but a shared responsibility. How many fathers, mothers, grandparents and teachers are showing our children, in small everyday gestures, how to face up to and navigate a crisis by adjusting their routines, lifting their gaze and fostering prayer. How many are praying, offering, and interceding for the good of all. Prayer and quiet service: these are our victorious weapons.”
My wish is that the Avalon and Brookewood community will use these “victorious weapons” to the fullest to help weather this storm. Through prayer and quiet service may we continue to live this Lenten season well as we prepare for the risen Christ at Easter.
