King Galleries Update April 2020

To our clients, our artists, and friends,

I thought I would reach out to you after our last email a few weeks ago.  While most everyone has been self-isolating and social distancing, I hope that while you are home, you enjoy getting to see the daily NEW ADDITION updates.  I have tried to keep things current each day as quite a few people have reached out to say that they appreciate something remaining "normal."  So they will still keep going up each day!

What are we doing at King Galleries during this time of crisis?

Most importantly, I want to express my appreciation for those of you who have continued to buy items through our website online or by phone.  THANK YOU!  Not only does it keep us upbeat and busy, but funds coming in now, are used as much a possible, to continue to buy from our gallery artists.  This has been a primary part of our mission for 25 years.  Now it is even more critical to help Native artists, their families, and Pueblo communities during difficult times.  Thank you for helping us help them and keep them creating!

Always Open Online!

As you may know, all non-essential businesses in New Mexico and Arizona have closed their stores.  However, we are still open online, and I'm in the gallery (alone!) each day.  We are answering calls and emails and DMs on social media. So, feel free to reach out anytime!

Did you know you can subscribe to an Artist online?

Did you know that you don't have to miss that perfect work from your favorite artist because you were unable to check out new additions?  Yes, we solved the let me know the problem!  We have a subscription link on many of your favorite artist pages that will allow you to receive an email each time something new is added.  The email has a photo and a full description of the new work, with a direct link to check it out on the website.  And don't worry about too much email in your box, you can unsubscribe anytime just by clicking a link on the email.  Click here to subscribe to the individual artist updates!  Also let us know if your favorite artist isn't listed, we can add them in!

Our Employees

Many of you are familiar with our incredible employees in Santa Fe and Scottsdale.  Although our storefronts are temporarily closed, our employees are still fully employed. This is one of my significant objectives, and we are getting lots of projects completed that I have procrastinated on for years!

Packing and Shipping

We are doing all our packing in house with our employees using gloves. All interior boxing and packing are new material.  Your safety and wellbeing, and your confidence in the protection of our shipping are vital to us!

Upcoming Events

Finally, we had events planned in April with Susan Folwell and Tammy Garcia.  They will both now be online events! We are going to be adding great new content to the website and social media for both events.

As the situations remain fluid, anything and everything can change, and we will keep you posted.
I remain available by email, phone, text, and Direct Message on Social Media.  I will try and be immediately responsive.

Please stay safe, and we hope this pandemic is short-lived and our economic recovery fast.

Please accept our Best Wishes for Everyone to Stay Healthy, and thank you for your continued support of the gallery, our artists, and being part of our team in a time of stress and uncertainty.

Some Good News....
Good News!  Robert Patricio's segment on "Colores!" PBS - New Mexico, is now available on You-Tube.  You can also view it on the gallery website.  I have added it to his various pieces we have online. I was honored to be there during the filming and it is a really beautiful testament to Acoma pueblo and their amazing pottery.
During April, I have decided to bring back our "Sunday Sale-Day".  Each Sunday I will put a different group of pieces up online with discounted prices.  Each time they will vary by Pueblo, artist or theme.  I'll try and keep it fun and lively with my selections.  They will be on our "sale" page for that one day and then I'll take them off sale Sunday pm and will have a new group the next week.
Chase "Kawinhut" Earles is one of the only Caddo potters working today.  We are delighted to be representing his pottery in both Santa Fe and Scottsdale, and it is viewable online.  His work is coil built, stone polished and traditionally fired.  Interestingly, the surface slip has ground Mussell shells in the clay.  After they are fired, they are etched to create the designs.  They are thin-walled and incredibly lightweight.  Check his work out online...it's exceptional!
I'm sure some of you are asking, "Why all the old American Indian Art Magazines"?  Well, I had the opportunity this winter to buy the remaining "pottery" issues that were of interest to me. The magazine, which closed about 5 years ago, was really a wealth of knowledge in Native Art.  There are two articles I wrote along with some GREAT articles on authenticity on unsigned pottery and early San Ildefonso pottery.  The magazines were always beautiful and some stunning ads!  I thought this was a great time for some "self-isolating" reading.  I wrote brief reviews of each magazine about the various articles of interest.

"Forward-thinking gallerists, museum curators, and clay artists themselves are fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of Native clay arts. At the forefront is Charles S. King. Owner of King Galleries in Santa Fe and Scottsdale, Arizona.  He is considered by many to be the dean of contemporary Southwestern Native clay arts."
