  Day 5 Lockdown

Essential Services

We will continue to update this list. A shortened version will be in Kaikōura Star.
If you are operating as an essential service and want to be added to the list, you need to be providing services that are listed by the government.
Please don’t be offended if we ask you to speak to the  Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment first for approval, as the list doesn’t clearly define all businesses. They can be contacted on essential@mbie.govt.nz or calling 0800 22 66 57 (9 am to 5 pm).
We are working on other channels to communicate essential information out to those that are not online but also ask that you keep your extended friends and family who may not be online up to date with key information of waste, groceries and healthcare processes.
*Please note that not all essential services operating are listed including farming, food production and so forth and hence you may see people moving around to undertake these services.

Reporting breaches:
A new webpage has been set up by the police to report any concerns about businesses and people operating non-essential services.

If you have concerns or would like more information on reporting   visit here

Please try to avoid posting concerns about businesses/people operating on social media. This can cause undue anxiety for the business but also for the community. We are all in this together.

Immigration & Visas

Do you have employees on a temporary work visa?

Immigration NZ is extending all temporary visas that are due to expire between April 2 and July 9. If a visa is due to expire BEFORE April 1 you MUST apply for a new visa online as soon as possible. All applications will be accepted and granted an interim visa.

Wage Subsidy

Wage Subsidy Clarifications

Minister of Finance Grant Robertson has clarified that the changes to the wage subsidy scheme announced on Friday mean that employers should be passing on the full subsidy to workers, except in the case where the person’s normal income is less than the level of the subsidy."
“We still want employers to use their best endeavours to pay employees 80% of their normal salaries.  Where this is not possible, we want the value of the subsidy to be passed on.
“But to be absolutely clear if a person’s income is normally less than the subsidy, they can be paid their normal salary.
“This is particularly an issue for part time employees some of whom normally earn less than the $350 per week.  We urge employers to use normal hours in the period before COVID-19 to assess the amount to be paid,” Grant Robertson said.

Wage Subsidy Scheme
Wage Subsidy Declarations: Be a good employer
It is important that businesses do the right thing by their staff to ensure that we have a strong and sustainable community.
In applying for the subsidy, you are agreeing to retain your staff and using the subsidy to keep this relationship going.

Please ensure that you understand your obligations as an employer
Wage subsidy and Tax:
You don’t have to pay GST or tax on the wage subsidy. It is exempt from GST and classified as "excluded income" for tax purposes.
Your employee will need to pay tax on their wage subsidy payment as it’s paid to them as part of their normal wages. This means it's subject to the usual deductions, e.g., PAYE, Student Loan, KiwiSaver, ACC, etc
.
Work & Income Covid-19 Support
The Wage Subsidy is open to all businesses that have been impacted by Covid-19. This includes sole traders.
