This Shabbat is known as Shabbat ha-Gadol for the haftarah that is read before Passover. This newsletter focuses on the theme of enoughness and of balance and suggests a practice for these challenging times. Intention/kavana for this week

BALANCE

The word dai/enough is found in the special prophetic reading for the Sabbath before Passover as will as in the song Dayenu from the seder. Part of the journey to freedom is to discover that freedom is not about doing whatever you want or having everything. Freedom is the ability to choose but it is also to be free from wanting everything you don't have. In this difficult and fearful time, it is harder not to want security from danger and assurance that everything will be alright. The word of Torah below suggests a Dayenu practice for this moment.

 A word of Torah:

     Dayenu- a practice of enoughness for Passover during a plague
 
   Dayenu is the most well-known Passover song, probably because of its simple refrain and rollicking tune. But it actually makes no sense. Would it really be enough if God had taken us out of Egypt but had not divided the sea for us? Wouldn’t the pursuing Egyptians have re-enslaved us? Would it really have been enough for God to have brought us to Mount Sinai but hadn’t given us the Torah? What would have been the point?
   Dayenu is actually suggesting an important spiritual principle of enoughness. We live our lives with ambitions and hopes. Some are fulfilled. Some never happen. With the passage of time, some fade away or are lost. Even as we mourn the losses, we are to remember the blessings that we have. Dayenu is not just striving for an acceptance of what we have. It is more than not being greedy or envious. It is coming to a sense of sufficiency—enoughness.
 
A Dayneu for our time:
  If I am infuriated by leaders who don’t lead but I can turn off the TV
right in the middle of their babbling—dayenu; it would be enough.
  If I can’t get together with my friends but I can see and talk to them by Zoom—dayenu; it would be enough.
  If I am stuck in my home for days that turn into weeks but at least I have a home unlike too many others—dayenu; it would be enough.
  If I am anxious about whether I have the coronavirus but I have a doctor who I trust for advice—dayenu; it would be enough
  If I have symptoms and my doctor says to stay at home and most likely I will be okay—dayenu; that would be scary but still it would be enough.
  If I need to go to the hospital at least I know I will get first rate care and while now I am really afraid –-still dayenu; it would be enough.
  If I was isolated and my loved ones couldn’t come to my room, I would cry but assured of their love—dayenu; it would have to be enough.
  If I knew that my life was coming to an end and death was at the door of my room, I would wrap myself in my story –its happy moments and its sad ones, in its blessings and in its final curse. I would remember that our stories don’t end but go on and on as long as memory endures—dayenu.
 
   In Deuteronomy 8:10, it reads, “you shall eat, be satisfied, and bless—ve-akhalta ve-savata u-veirakhta. Being satisfied is not the same as physically feeling full. It is a deep awareness that I have enough. We all have had moments when we feel a void and try to fill it with external things.  Sometimes we hope the quart of ice cream will make us feel better, less anxious, more loved. For a moment, we may feel good because we feel we deserve a treat but we know the ice cream will not make us feel loved. We often come to feel regret because we feel unhealthy or full of unwanted calories.
   Dayenu reminds us that while life is never perfect, we can still feel deep gratitude. We need to look at our lives in perspective. While, for example, I am not as flexible as I once was, and my hearing is declining, it is also true that with reading glasses I can still see, and most joyously I can play with my grandchildren.  A Dayenu practice strengthens our ability to enjoy what we do have.  It doesn’t mean we should give up striving for things we want. It does mean that we should understand our lives within the context of imperfection, both of ourselves and the world. If we can do that then the verse will be true. Ve-akhalta—we can partake of this world, ve-savata---we can embrace a feeling of satisfaction, u-veirakhta—and then we will feel that that our lives are blessed rather than diminishment by disappointments. And when we feel blessed, then in turn we will be a blessing to those who are in our lives.
