News, ideas, research in social entrepreneurship and philanthropy, from the Marshall Institute
📢 News
This month, Impact and Insight focuses on how private action is working for public benefit during the covid-19 pandemic. It is a broad remit: we include philanthropy, social business, social enterprise and the voluntary sector.
The voluntary sector has been badly hit by the crisis, but exactly how much is it worth to the economy and to society? Is the UK government's bail out enough? Jonathan Roberts, the Marshall Institute's Director of Teaching, argues that government support should acknowledge the sector's wide societal contributions, and should not focus on charities alone. Plus, how philanthropy is responding to covid-19 globally: while individual donors, including Jack Dorsey, Bill Gates and Madonna, have pledged to help tackle the pandemic, there are calls for more to be done.
