Mike and Reuben from Newtown Jesus Club

Dear Friend,

I pray that you and your family are well during these difficult times we are now living in. I pray for your adequate finances, good health, and a deeper relationship with Christ.

I know things are getting difficult for many people. I have friends, and even neighbours across the street, who have all lost their jobs in the past week. Some worked at travel agents, clubs, restaurants, charities, and even newspapers. Some are already talking about where they will live in a few months when they can’t pay their rent. And on top of all that none of our churches are able to meet on Sundays, or provide other activities throughout the week.

But all this has happened before in our history and the Church has not only adapted and survived but continued to influence and impact society in major ways. These past few weeks I have been reading about such people as Cyprian, bishop of Carthage who lived through the plague in North Africa (c. A.D. 250 … they even named it after him!); and Dionysius, bishop of Alexandria who saw it from the Roman side; and then Martin Luther, who in 1527 lived through the bubonic plague; and Charles Spurgeon who lived through the London cholera outbreak in 1854. As my good friend Dr. Gary Hoag wrote in this article, we can look to these Christian leaders to consider how we should act during the COVID-19 pandemic today.

Gary states that we should follow the example of church leaders who lived through other pandemics by:

  1. Praying for people, while physically avoiding people,
  2. Pausing to rest and think, and writing to people when we are unable to visit them face-to-face,
  3. Celebrating and uniting people together in Christ’s victory over death (Easter).
The ministry of WeBelong and our Jesus Clubs are still continuing strong despite this pandemic. We have adapted and adjusted the way we do our ministry to still be teaching adults with an intellectual disability the good news of Jesus Christ, and continue to stay in touch and impact the lives of our members. We are helping our clubs use innovative ways to connect with their members, such as Zoom video meetings and Facebook live streaming. Our Newtown club has already produced YouTube videos to facilitate the Bible lessons, and then posted out the buddy sheets to their members. I particularly liked the way they named all the members of their club! You can view it here: https://youtu.be/bl4zCGtEXa8.

Amazingly, in the middle of a pandemic, God has continued to expand this ministry and two new churches recently agreed to start a new Club!

Our two new clubs will both meet during their Sunday morning services:
With God's grace our ministry to adults with intellectual disabilities is growing even in these times. I am so grateful for your prayers and financial support. Without people like you giving to our work we would not be able to continue this unique and important ministry to adults with an intellectual disability.
Your ongoing prayers and financial support enable this work to grow.
