“I accept chaos, I’m not sure whether it accepts me.” (Bob Dylan)

Life can feel pretty chaotic at times, perhaps especially when the established order appears to be closing down around us. At times like that I sometimes find I have an irresistible urge to reorganise things in my home, which seems to me to be a not-too-subtle way of my brain making sure that it understands at least part of my world. As a result, the country may be in melt-down, but my CD’s are currently in alphabetical order again.

Accepting the reality of chaos seems harder for some of us than others, but learning that we can’t hope to entirely control, understand or explain everything is part of learning to let go. Simplistic explanations have their place, but they struggle to contain increasingly sophisticated and complex questions, and so the chaos ensues. Until we let go of the need to control the chaos we will be caught up in it’s confusion.
