GAIN LINE Analytics has created a specific Cohesion Analytics webinar presentation series. The online presentation series will allow for a time and cost effective way to learn about the impact of Cohesion on team dynamics, how governance decision impacts long-term performance and how recruitment and selection influence day-to-day outcomes.

The presentation series will be broken into Corporate and Sports sections and then further into the unique components of each.

Cohesion Analytics allows performance to be analysed in context by assessing each teams Key Cohesion Markers against on a game by game basis. By doing this it enables game results to be understood in greater detail; Who was the better team and should have they won, what were each teams strengths and weaknesses and what were the potential factors in outlier results. In the game of Rugby League, as an example, there are 50 different Key Cohesion Markers that can be used to determined potential game outcomes and in Rugby Union there are over 100 (and more being developed across all codes as the games are being analysed further and further) – Cohesion is not just about who keeps their players together the best.

The game-by-game predictive nature of the Markers allows us to use them to give team Performance in Context so that teams understand whether a win or loss was within expectation which allows appropriate decision making based upon that. There is no gain in making drastic decisions if a team lost the first 3 games of the season when those 3 games were against the best 3 teams in the competition.

This brings us now to the current shut down of virtually all sporting competitions due to Covid-19. We wanted to continue the seasons of the NRL and Super Rugby (2 competitions we have the most interactions with) using the predictive nature of the Key Cohesion Markers analysis.

Why are we doing this?

Because we can.

A lot of game-by-game prediction tools such as Elo Ratings require actual game-by-game results to be truly effective (because tools like that need previous performance to indicate future performance) and are more an indicator of ‘form” but because the Key Cohesion Markers are a manifestation of the recruitment practice/game-by-game selection of a team we can use squad make-up and historical selection trends to create game by game team lists.
Because of the strong relationship between the Key Cohesion Markers and performance, the use of squad and team lists is a truer reflection of “actual performance capacity” rather than “form” and therefore a reflection of Performance in Context.

The virtual seasons will be by no means perfect but will still tell a very good story while the competitions are on hiatus. Historically the difference between the actual season results and the predicted results is very close. During the 2019 seasons the NRL and Super Rugby home & away table positional differential to the Key Cohesion Marker game-by-game predicted home & away table were an average of 1.6 and 1.7 positions respectively (1.4 positions for Super Rugby if the Waratahs were removed, and that can be partly explained here The GAIN LINE Report #35).

The #VirtualNRL and #VirtualSuperRugby seasons we are running will give a very good understanding how the season will play out and hopefully provide some interest during these times of old “classic” replays. The game and season will be played out via game-by-game results and ongoing competition ladders (latest results and tables shown which have continued on from the actual NRL RD2 and Super Rugby RD7).
