Alerts

The City will report out any cases that are a public concern*. There are currently two in our area:

  • Alexandria Health Department Urges Self-Quarantine for Certain Patrons of Murphy’s Irish Pub*, March 25 (see news release)

  • Fairfax Health Department Urges Self-Quarantine of Attendees of a Service at a Church in Bailey’s Crossroads*, March 20 (see news release).

*Remember, even if there is no concern to you about a case, please continue social and physical distancing, which means no more playdates, no more visits with friends, and keeping at least 6 feet of distance from others. Also, wash your hands regularly, sanitize high-touch surfaces often, and stay home if you feel sick!

Governor Northam's Order: Stay Home.

Today Governor Northam ordered all Virginians to STAY HOME. Essential trips to the grocery store, pharmacy, and doctor are allowed. You may go outside for exercise. Read the full order here.

“To date, this has been a suggestion to Virginians,” said Governor Northam. “Today it’s an order.”
The City of Falls Church strongly urges residents to follow the issued  today

This order is critical to help slow the spread of COVID-19 as cases continue to climb across the state with 225 confirmed cases in the Fairfax County Health District. Social distancing is the most effective method to limit the disease’s transmission

The governor’s action, which currently remains in effect until June 10, means that residents should stay in homes with only a few exceptions for essential activities, including:
  • Getting groceries or medicines.
  • Caring for a sick family member or friend.
  • Getting medical care for yourself .
  • Going outside for exercise for yourself or pets (although not in groups larger than 10 people).
  • Getting essential social or government services.
  • Traveling to and from work or place of worship.
Do not go out unless you need to go out.
"Do not go out unless you need to go out," said Northam. "This is very different from wanting to go out. Don't go to the store just for one thing. Wait until you have a whole list of needs."
As a result of the new order, the City of Falls Church Government is examining our services and locations to see if there is any additional impact beyond what was announced last week.

The governor’s previous directives also remain in place, including the closure of recreational and entertainment businesses like movie theaters and gyms and restaurants and bars except for take-out or delivery.

The governor said that the state will continue to enforce the ban against gatherings of more than 10 people.

Quick News

  • Utility Scams -- Stay Smart
While the City has no reports of residents being affected by these scams, we have heard from our jurisdictional partners in the Virginia-DC-Maryland region.

NEVER give provide your social security number or personal information to anyone initiating contact with you claiming to be a utility representative or requesting you to send money to another person or entity other than your local utility providers.

ALWAYS ask to see a company photo ID before allowing any utility worker into your home or business

DO NOT give payment in any form - cash, check, or credit - to anyone coming to your door.

VERIFY -- If you ever question the legitimacy of a visitor or call, call your utility directly.

Question of the Day

My daily trips to the grocery store are so good for my sanity. Can I still do this under the Governor's new order?

Governor Northam addressed this directly in his press conference today:

"Don't go to the store just for one thing. Wait until you have a whole list of needs."

The grocery store is not a place to socialize. It is not a place to get exercise or stretch your legs. It is a place to get essentials, get out, and get home.

Keep up with the walks around the block (while staying 6 feet away from passersby). Stroll through City parks with your family (but not with the gaggle of neighborhood kids). Enjoy the beautifully fresh spring air -- and then go home and stay home.
