Virtual Hugs & Wellness Tips

COVID-19 & The New Normal: Week 3

We are now into Week 3 of The New Normal - sheltering in place, stay-at-home orders, lockdowns, curfews, work-from-home realities (for those who can), online learning for kids (for those who can), just to name a few of the changes we are all navigating. The following is our mantra in these times, and we are committed to sending you virtual hugs, wellness tips (wellness = self-care + inclusive connections), and just a touch of humor at least once a week.

In these times of social distancing and unimaginable collective stress, our need to take care of ourselves and each other is more critical than ever. We need to move beyond me and them to we and us. The more we all focus on the collective us, the more each of us benefits.

We are thinking of you.
We are sending you lots of virtual hugs.
And, we are here to contribute to your wellness.

HAPPY (Sort of) EQUAL PAY DAY!!

This date symbolizes how far into the year women must work to earn what men earned in the previous year.

WELLNESS = Self Care + Inclusive Connections

CONNECT. Connect with others. We are in this (however we define what this is!) together, and it's critical to wellness that we feel connected to each other.
  • Divisions based on fear are common in times of crisis. Asian Americans in the US are being targeted and discriminated against in hateful ways that we all need to pay attention to. Take a few minutes to become more aware of what's happening (USA Today, NY Times, CNN, Washington Post, etc.) and step up as an ally whenever and however you can (forward the articles to others to increase awareness, check-in on people, tweet/email/call news sources when they refer to the Coronavirus as anything other than that, etc.).
  • Use your frustrations as fuel for empathy. Think of the many people who have always been confined to their homes due to disabilities, illnesses, and/or other circumstances. Think of the many people who have always had to homeschool their children because of circumstances beyond their control. Think of the healthcare workers who have always worried about contagion and have gone in to work day after day to take care of all of us. Our frustrations are temporary, but we can use them to empathize with others in ways that outlast this crisis.
GIVE. Give kindness and compassion to yourself, to people around you, to people you are connected to virtually, and even to people to whom you are not connected. Give. Give. Give. Just remember to start by giving yourself what you need first.
  • Ask people how they are and really take the time to listen.
  • If you are on LinkedIn, endorse a skill and/or write a positive recommendation for one of your contacts.
  • Leave "thank you" messages for reporters in the comments sections of articles you find useful/enjoyable.
BE ACTIVE. Move your body in whatever ways you can. Stretch. Physical activity is critical to your wellness...and to your sanity. TAKE NOTICE. Pay attention to what is going on around you. Pay attention to how you are feeling. Paying attention keeps your brain sharp. Pay attention to things you would normally not notice.  KEEP LEARNING. Learn about anything and everything.  Did you know that the reason the taste of artificial banana flavoring doesn’t taste like bananas is that it is based on a type of banana that was wiped out by a plague in the 1950s? You may never ever need this information, but learning it nudged you just a little farther along in your wellness journey!
  • Nextions will be doing free webinars on wellness every week: Wednesday Wellness Webinars. Join us, and please let us know what issues and topics you would like for us to address. Register for the first one on April 1st below.
  • We are also working with all of you to create online learning opportunities for your workplaces to continue the conversations on inclusion even in these times of social distancing. Thank you to all of you who have sent us ideas for trainings and discussions that you would like for us to deliver. Please stay tuned for more information on that.
