APRIL 2020

A Note from Jane

Spring Cleaning has taken on a whole new meaning this year! COVID-19 has taught us a few things about fighting viruses now and in the future.

Kill Germs
We know we all must wash hands often and effectively. Experts recommend this method:
  • Dampen hands and turn off the water
  • Lather hands with regular soap (anti-bacterial soap is not better) long enough to sing twice through “Happy Health Day to Us” . . . our new version of “Happy Birthday to You.”
  • Use hand sanitizer as a “second best” to soap and water.
We also need to keep surfaces clean. Experts again recommend soap and water or cleaners that are 60% alcohol based for the COVID-19 virus.

White vinegar is another non-toxic germ killer under usual circumstances. Your students can make their own effective and inexpensive citrus/vinegar cleaner to use at home by following these instructions. Vinegar kills germs, and orange peels soften the sharp vinegar smell.

Stay Healthy
One way to boost our immune systems is to be in overall good health. Unfortunately, Columbia ranks among the top ten most overweight cities in America.

In her blog, Healthy Kids Happy Kids, Dr. Elisa Song, a pediatrician in Belmont, California, recommends healthful habits like limiting sugar, virus risks or not. Song says research indicates sugar suppresses the ability of white blood cells to fight infections.
Wishing us all a healthy spring!

Earth Day Celebrations

April 22, 2020 will mark the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. The Environmental Education Association of SC (EEASC) had hoped to celebrate this big day with these two local businesses 14 Carrot Whole Foods Market and Black Rooster who sell locally sourced foods and support environmental education.

We will look forward to rescheduling those celebrations post COVID-19.

EEASC

Recently, members of the Environmental Education Association of South Carolina shared lessons that contrasted the environmental features of Palestine and South Carolina at the March First Thursday “Worlds of Creativity Event” at the Columbia Art Center. Children tasted pistachios and made a pistachio tree craft (pictured above) while learning about this nut, which is a favorite in both cultures but only grows in deserts.

Contests & Grants

  • Congratulations to Cherish Taylor of Irmo Middle School, winner of PalmettoPride's 3rd annual Children's Book Contest. Taylor received her own published copy of Louie’s Park, which she wrote and illustrated. One copy of Louie’s Park will be donated to every elementary school in South Carolina as a continuous effort to educate and encourage students of all ages to be active in litter prevention. Read more here.

  • Innovation Grant
The Next Energy Engineering class at the Richland Two Institute of Innovation (R2i2) was named the state winner of a Samsung grant for the students’ innovative ideas to improve recycling at their school. Here is the video they submitted halfway through their project.

Instructor Kirstin Bullington wrote, “As the state winner, we were awarded $15,000 to purchase technology. In addition, we are now collecting six times the amount of recycling collected each week. And the game bin is far less contaminated than our regular bins; all of the bottles in the game bin are empty and capped. We’ve also educated people to flatten boxes and leave them outside the bins so the parking lot recycling dumpsters won't fill up too soon.”

We hope to see their finished project at a to be scheduled community event!

  • Solar Grants
Congratulations to Dent Middle School, Eau Claire High School, Gilbert High School and Irmo High School for being selected by Dominion Energy Solar to have a solar array installed right outside each school. This offers school families a chance to learn firsthand about harnessing solar energy. Full story here.

  • Garden Grants
