Check out another recipe from our most recent Cook to Thrive! Survivorship Cooking Class! This southern dish fits just great into the Mediterranean eating pattern, so Julie decided to name it for that! Also note that if you don't have some of the ingredients, just leave them out or substitute with something similar!

NUTRITION LINKS FROM THE PREVIOUS WEEKS: Julie has been giving virtual education for over 12 years now, and you can spend a lot of time catching up on nutrition recommendations via her website CancerDietitian.com, or podcast, the Cancer Dietitian Podcast.

Are you wondering if restaurant take out or delivery is safe right now?

The short answer is YES, it's perfectly safe. And it's helping to keep our restaurants in business! With a few common sense precautions like washing your hands before you eat, and making sure you store the food safely, it's a great way to find variety in your meal plan.

Check out NC State's information regarding takeout food and COVID-19.

Check out these apps for your phone that help you order and pay for takeout or deliver!

Are social distancing and closed restaurant dining areas cramping your style? While we can't get together with friends for meals right now, you can still enjoy your favorite restaurant food! Try out one of the following apps for your phone and enjoy your meal while on the phone or video call with a friend, grandchild, or on the porch or patio with your loved one at home.
  • Swipeby is an app (developed by a Wake Forest grad!) where you can find local restaurants, order, pay with credit and the restaurant has a dedicated parking spot that you park in for curbside pick kup. Convenient!
    Find SWIPEBY Here!
  • Door Dash, Uber Eats and Grub Hub are all apps that allow you to order from restaurants, pay and have it delivered to your door! Check them out and see which one has your favorite restaurant.
In addition, many restaurants are allowing people to call, place an order, and come by for pick up. Reach out to your favorite restaurant and see how they are handling takeout orders.

Don't Forget To Go Outside!

With all our time at home and access to interesting things online, we recommend that you make sure to get outside a few times each day to breathe the fresh air and get some activity. Walks in your neighborhood or at a local park, as long as you are keeping your distance from others, is perfectly fine!

We also encourage you to spend some time digging in the dirt! Think about planting flowers, vegetables and herbs. You can pot all kinds of things in containers on a patio or balcony, or in a spot in your yard. This week we are sharing websites and video tutorials to guide you on "dirt therapy." Plus, just thinking forward to having tomatoes in the summer is enough to cheer us all up!

NC Cooperative Extention

  • A wonderful resource that each county has is the NC Cooperative Extension! Find your county's webpage by putting the county name at the beginning of this web address: YOUR COUNTY .ces.ncsu.edu/. For example, forsyth county website is forsyth.ces.ncsu.edu and davie county is davie.ces.ncsu.edu (do not use www with these!). They each provide advice, soil testing, insect identification and holding information sessions online. Call to find out what your county is offering!
  • To contact Cooperative Extension Forsyth County staff, call 336-703-2850.
  • To contact Davie Cooperative Extension, call 336-753-6100.

Sprouting Seeds at Home!

[This Info from the NC State Cooperative Extension Article Here]

Sprouting seeds is like watching magic unfold in slow motion; all you need is a seed, a little water and sprinkle on the time (not thyme). The seeds swell into plump little packages and, voila, a root explodes out, followed by a shoot.

Don’t have packets of seeds around your house? No worries. Just look around: Do you have dried beans in your pantry? Or could you harvest a few from fruits or vegetables you have on hand? If not, what about stepping outside to see if you can find seeds in flowers or weeds?

Start by taking a damp paper towel and fold it in half. Put your seeds on the paper towel and slide them into a plastic baggie. Check every day to see how the seed changes. How long does it take for a seed to germinate? Do they all germinate at the same time?

Once the seeds have sprouted leaves, gently tuck them into a pot filled with soil and watch them grow. (Don’t have a pot? Check your recycling bin. Are there plastic containers you could decorate? They will work just fine!)

Do you have a favorite gardening resource, website or youtube video/chanel? Tell us what it is so we can share with others!

Learn Something New!

Here are some ideas that we have found fun and thought could help you stretch your mind while you're at home. You can also use your mind by doing the crosswords, Sudoku or reading a book.

Spread the Love!

Do you have a favorite healthcare provider? NOW is the time to send them a note of appreciation! Hand write something and bring with you to your next appointment, or put it in the mail.

You Can Help!

We had to cancel our annual auction, which raises 25% of our budget. If you are able, consider helping us make our goal despite the cancellation. FIND OUT MORE HERE!

There are some key supplies that we are in need of right now. If you have these at home, or are at the store and can grab some and bring them by the office, it would be much appreciated. We will have a donation bin around the back side of the building that you can place them in. These are our top 3 needs!
  1. Pullups (size S, M, L)
  2. Ostomy bags
  3. Nutritional Drinks (ensure, boost, or store brand)
  4. Surgical Gloves
