A Letter from the Friends of Maudslay President

Dear Friends of Maudslay,                                                        March 25, 2020

Normally in the month of March, the Friends of Maudslay send out a membership letter asking you to continue in your support of the organization by renewing your membership.  But, as we all know too well, these are not normal times.  Many of us are sheltered in place in our home, only venturing out when we need supplies.  But in addition to food, we all need to get outside and breathe in the fresh air in this beautiful area where we live.  So instead of asking about membership, I am going to update you on what is happening in Maudslay.

In response to the virus, DCR (Department of Conservation and Recreation) has closed both headquarters and restrooms in all parks across the state and stopped trash collection.  Please follow “carry in and carry out” practices until further notice.  On a more positive note, they have also discontinued collecting fees, so everyone can now enjoy the beauty and serenity of the 16 miles of trails in Maudslay for free!  In the past three weeks  I, personally, have discovered trails that I didn’t know existed.  Following the guidelines of social distancing, you, too can visit and explore!  The first azalea is in bloom by the well, crocus and daffodils are beginning to bloom, the snowdrops are at their peak, and the rhododendron and azalea buds are filling as they get ready to burst into bloom in April and May.

April and May are also the months when the coyotes and foxes in the park give birth to the pups and kits that we so enjoy watching through the spring and summer.  It’s good to be aware that they are there.  Owls, hawks and other birds are sitting in nests on eggs which will hatch over the next few weeks.  There are lots of wild flowers in the woods so please stay on the trails to a avoid trampling their beauty.  Go, explore and enjoy!  If you are not able to leave your home, please go to our facebook page or website as we will continue to post photographs so you can view the beautiful vistas and “What’s in Bloom.”

In addition to cancelling the membership drive, I have also postponed the annual meeting which is normally the 4th Thursday of March until May 28 at Ober House at 6:30 pm.  If the situation allows, the meeting will take place at that time and the annual membership drive will begin in May as well.

If this is a time when you are able to support the Friends of Maudslay, you can either send a check made out to MSPA to Friends of Maudslay, 74 Curzon Mill Road, Newburyport, MA 01950 or donate on our website maudslayassociation.org.

This letter will be electronic mail only so feel free to forward to anyone who might find the information useful.  Please be safe, take care of each other and enjoy the outdoors while practicing social distancing.

Sincerely,

Marlys Edwards
