We need #SafeStreetsforAll now more than ever

Dear Friend,

I hope you and your loved ones are in good health. As our world grapples with the coronavirus pandemic, we're thankful to everyone fighting this virus: from healthcare workers on the front lines to MARTA employees keeping public transit surfaces sanitized, to individuals practicing proper social distancing--we each have an important role to play. Atlanta Bicycle Coalition staff have been working remotely since March 16th to help flatten the curve, but we haven’t stopped advocating on your behalf.

If anything, safe streets feel even more relevant to the world today. Many people are biking, walking, and riding transit to fulfill essential responsibilities. Sidewalks and streets are full of families exercising while social distancing.

Yet with less traffic congestion, we’ve also seen increased speeding. This further endangers peoples’ lives at a time when our hospitals threaten to be dangerously overwhelmed with patients. Traffic deaths & injuries are preventable, and that resonates even more loudly in this moment of healthcare resource vulnerability.

Today, we face increasing uncertainty when it comes to funding our work. We're working harder than ever to reclaim Atlanta’s streets for people to walk, ride, and roll. Your donations help keep us going, and we need your help.

Please donate to support our advocacy today, so we can emerge stronger than ever from this crisis.

I wish you good health, peace of mind, and safety in all respects.

Celebrating a victory on the path to Vision Zero & safe speed limits

This week, Atlanta City Council’s Transportation Committee unanimously approved Vision Zero & Safe Speeds legislation thanks to our advocacy in partnership with many organizations, neighborhoods, and community advocates. (Due to the pandemic, City Council committees are meeting remotely.)

The Vision Zero bill also sets a default city speed limit of 25 mph--a long-term policy goal of ours! Even as we advocate to strengthen the legislation by including more streets, we're pleased with this first step. Next, it will go to the full Council to vote, expected April 20th. Let your Councilmember know you support the bill.

Bike shops deemed essential businesses in Atlanta's pandemic response

Our lives are being challenged in many ways--businesses are being closed and workers are left without income,  transportation decisions and options become dilemmas, and spaces to practice healthy activities are being reshaped.

At the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, we’re doing what we can to lessen the impact of these challenges. This week, we worked with local bike shops to get bike shops designated essential businesses under the Mayor’s revised Stay at Home Order

Update on DeKalb Ave

ICYMI, here’s our blog post about the changes we want to see on DeKalb Ave. We are calling for the City to make these changes and are staying in close contact with staff as the design evolves. CycNet, the CDC's employee cycling group initiated one confirmed change we advocated for: connecting the short bike lane from Arizona Ave west to Clifton. Advocacy at work!

Atlanta Streets Alive turns 10

10 years, 29 open streets programs, 83 miles, and 1.7 MILLION participants--what a decade it has been! As we recently announced, for the 10th anniversary of Atlanta Streets Alive we’re examining our approach to open streets because we believe in their power to change habits and change our city, but only if they happen more frequently.

Our 2020 programming will take place in the fall to give us more time to plan and grow this initiative. We’re also cooking up a fun way to celebrate our birthday virtually in May, so stay tuned!

Virtual City Cycling commences!

Whether you are riding our city streets out of necessity to get to work, to the pharmacy, to the grocery store, or exercise, the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition is here for you.

For the next six weeks, we''ll be offering virtual city cycling courses. In each lesson, you will brush up skills needed to safely ride in Atlanta’s streets with a focus on how to make essential trips while social distancing.
