Three Recommended Podcast Episodes Every Humpday

When you are on your next virtual happy hour, tell your friends to click on this link to subscribe.
As I previously mentioned, next week's newsletter will complete my 2nd year in existence. One hundred and four straight Podcast Gumbo newsletter editions - a real labor of love. I also responded to a reader's comment about having something familiar in your inbox and I said I would keep plowing ahead. No breaks.

What a difference a week makes. When I wasn't binge-watching shows about cheerleaders and some guy in a high castle, I did a lot of self-reflection and decided to take a month-long break after next week's newsletter. After I come back, my newsletter will be sent only monthly. And only time will tell if I start selling ads or going the subscription route.

Hopefully, that doesn't upset any of you. It was a tough decision but one I've been thinking about for a while.

Lastly, I just wanted you all to know that today is April 1st and the 35th anniversary of Sidd Finch.

Where’s Your Ugly Stick?

The Skimmer’s Hook: A club that’s so exclusive, George Clooney can’t even join.

Listen if you like: Exclusive Clubs, Piobbico, Criminal

Everyone wants to feel like they belong to something. However, I’m not sure this is the club you want to be a member of. Sure, it’s in Italy and maybe that’s enticing. And it has a fancy name - Club dei Brutti.

But that’s where you may want to take a step back. That name is just a fancy way of saying the World Association of Ugly People. And if you had doubts, know that their emblem is the head of a wild boar.

You can try to join but you need to go there and get judged. I’ll save my money because I hate getting rejected.

Podcast: This is Love - Ugly Club (30 mins)

MILF

What’s it like to be famous and Asian?

Listen if you like: American Pie, White Castle, Shades Apart

There’s a new show in town and it’s called Asian Enough. It’s a podcast about being Asian-American and all that comes with it. They interview famous people that um, are Asian-American.

I debated long and hard about recommending this podcast because at the time I’m writing this, I have not been asked to be a guest. That fact should completely ruin the show’s credibility. But I’ve decided to take the high road.

In the first episode, they interview MILF Guy Number 2, John Cho. I don’t think it has anything to do with the fact that I’m also a famous Asian American but I found Cho more interesting than just one memorable scene. And for the record, when I think of Cho, I think of Harold first.

And in case I haven’t name-dropped about it before, my friend’s song is playing in the background of this iconic scene.

Dinner’s On You

How many acts of kindness do you do daily? How about doing five?

Listen if you like: Treating People To Meals, Doing Good

Last week, I attended my very first Podcast Brunch Club. Since we are social distancing, I attended the Virtual PBC. March’s Listening List was about Happiness, which I think we can all agree we need more of these days. This recommendation is straight from that list.

How many times have you been out to lunch with a friend and you argue about who is going to pay? What’s the typical result - you splitting it? Or one person paying with the other knowing they will get the next time? This episode starts with that same scenario but they do something completely different. My act of kindness will be to not spoil it for you.

For those that didn’t listen to my National Manatee Appreciation Day episode (WHY NOT?!?), my guest that day was Adela Mizrachi, the founder of Podcast Brunch Club.

Podcast: The Science of Happiness - Making Kindness Contagious (16 mins)

Extra Hot Sauce

Some friends of mine just dropped their brand new shiny podcasts in the last week. Don’t wait for me to recommend them to you - get on these now.

Strides Forward features stories about women and running. The first season focuses on the Comrades Marathon. If you thought 26.2 was tough, how about 56? (30 mins)

- Writ Large is a podcast about books that changed the world. They discuss Around the World in 80 Days for their first episode. Will they ever talk about my favorite book, The Outsiders? (27 mins)

Mina Kimes of ESPN Daily is not a friend (yet?) but I’m a massive fan of the USWNT and I was watching the soccer match on tv when this sh*t came down. It was stunning. (24 mins)

I’ve been podcasting for 13 whole weeks—time to talk money.
