CHUMASH

Parshas Vayikra - Chamishi with Rashi

Today Hashem tells Moshe Rabbeinu about another kind of Korban that the Yidden should bring, called a Korban Chatas.

If a person does an aveira by mistake, he needs to bring a Korban Chatas. There are 4 groups of people who the Torah says bring a Chatas:

1) A regular person (like if someone does a melacha on Shabbos by mistake)
2) A Kohen Gadol
3) The Sanhedrin (if they tell everyone to do the wrong thing by mistake)
4) A king

In today’s Chumash, we learn about the Korban Chatas of the Kohen Gadol, the Korban Chatas of the Sanhedrin, and the Korban Chatas of a king. In tomorrow’s Chitas, we learn about the Korban Chatas of a regular person!

The Torah tells us the details of how each one of these korbanos should be brought, and also the differences between them.

TEHILLIM

1 - 9

Today we are starting the Sefer Tehillim, from Kapitel Alef!

In Kapitel Daled (the kapitel you say if you are 3) there is a posuk (which also has a Chassidishe Niggun that goes to the words): “Zivchu Zivchei Tzedek, Uvitchu El Hashem!” It talks about bringing korbanos to Hashem, like we are learning about in Chumash!

Another posuk that you probably know is in Kapitel Hey: “Va’ani BeRov Chasdecha Avo Veisecha...” We say this posuk in Mah Tovu. It means that we come to Hashem’s house (like a shul) to daven and thank Him! That’s why we say this posuk at the beginning of davening.

TANYA

Likutei Amarim Perek Lamed-Zayin

Today the Alter Rebbe gives us a mashal to tell us what happens when we learn Torah.

What happens with a little child whose parents go outside for a minute? The child starts crying, “Tatty, Tatty!” He wants Tatty to come to him right away so that he is not alone.

In this world, the neshama can sometimes feel alone, and it wants to be feel close to Hashem. The neshama can also call out to Hashem like a little child calling to his Tatty so he is not alone. When we learn Torah, we are “calling” out to Hashem that we want Hashem to be close to us, so that we don’t feel alone!

One of the things we can learn from today’s Tanya is that if we are feeling alone, we can listen to a shiur or learn something from a sefer, in a part of Torah we enjoy. Then we will feel how Hashem is with us!

HAYOM YOM

Alef Nisan

We don’t say Tachanun the whole month of Nissan!

During the first two weeks of Nisan, we say the “Nasi” every day.

A Nasi means a prince, the head of a Shevet. Each Nasi was the leader of his own Shevet. For the Chanukas Hamishkan, each Nasi brought special presents to the Mishkan. Each Nasi took a turn on one day of Nisan, and on that day we read about their korban. Shevet Levi was not part of these korbanos.

After reading the Nasi, we say a Yehi Ratzon afterwards, saying that “If I am from that Shevet, I should get all of the kedusha that was brought down through that korban.”

The Rebbe Rashab told his brother-in-law, R’ Moshe Horenstein, who was a kohen, to say the Yehi Ratzon anyway, even though a kohen KNOWS he’s from Shevet Levi, who doesn’t have one of these Korbanos! This is because really every Yid is connected, through something called “ibur.” Even if we are not from that Shevet, we can still get the kedusha from it!

SEFER HAMITZVOS

Shiur #234 - Mitzvas Asei #100

Since we are learning a set of halachos that doesn’t have its own mitzvah, Hilchos Keilim, we are reviewing other mitzvos from Sefer Tahara, since keilim can also get these kinds of tumah!

Today’s mitzvah (Mitzvas Asei #100) is about the kind of Tumah that a woman gets when she has a baby, called Tumas Yoledes. These are the halachos about how she can make other people or things tomei. Even though it is important to know this mitzvah and its halachos always, as part of Torah, it was actually kept when we had a Beis Hamikdash, since someone tomei is not allowed to go into the Beis Hamikdash or eat from the korbanos!

RAMBAM

Hilchos Keilim

In today’s Rambam, we learn more about Keilim and when they can become Tomei. Today we learn about ovens and stoves!

In Perek Tes-Vov we learn about when an oven or stove is counted as finished and can become Tomei.

Perek Tes-Zayin teaches us about when an oven or stove is broken — can it still get Tumah?

Perek Yud-Zayin has the halachos about parts of an oven, or things that are attached — like a towel rack or a shelf for spices. If the oven is Tomei, do they become Tomei too?

RAMBAM PEREK ECHOD

Hilchos To'ein Venit'an - Perek Gimmel

We learned that if there is a disagreement about owing money, the person sometimes need to make a shevuah about the amount that he owes.

If a person only agrees about a very little part of the money, less than a perutah, he doesn’t make a shevuah. He also doesn’t make a shevuah if the amount they are arguing over is worth less than two me’in. So if the two people are arguing over dates, and one person says “You owe me 100 dates!” but the other person says, “I only owe you 90,” they are only arguing about 10 of the dates. If 10 dates isn’t worth at least 2 me’in, the person doesn’t make a shevuah. And if someone says “You owe me $100!” but the other person says that he only owes him a perutah, then he doesn’t make a shevuah.

INYANA D'YOMA

Haggados for Kids

The Rebbe tells us that children should have their own siddur, Chumash, and other seforim, and (lehavdil) a tzedakah box.

One other sefer that every child should have is a Haggadah Shel Pesach!

In Shulchan Aruch it says that we buy children nuts and sweet things before Yom Tov, to make them happy on Yom Tov. It is also a good idea to get a new siddur or a new sefer, which will give them chayus to use it!

TEFILLAH

Yehi Ratzon After the Nasi

Today is Rosh Chodesh Nissan! We say extra pieces in davening, and add Hallel and Musaf. Don’t forget to say the Nasi after davening! Today’s Nasi is for Shevet Yehudah.

For the first twelve days of Chodesh Nisan, the Nesiim of each shevet took turns bringing special korbanos for the Chanukas Hamizbeiach.

After reading the part of the Torah telling us the korbanos of that day’s Nasi, we say a paragraph starting with Yehi Ratzon.

What is this Yehi Ratzon about?

We ask Hashem that the Ruchnius koach of that shevet, the Nitzutzin Kadishin, should shine on us! Each shevet served Hashem in a different way, and since Yidden are all connected, we each have a part of all of the shevatim inside of us.

When we say this paragraph, we ask Hashem that this Ruchnius koach should help us learn Torah and serve Hashem with Yiras Shomayim. We ask that this koach should help us and stay with us and our children, forever!

HALACHOS HATZRICHOS

Birchas Ha'ilanos

It is a mitzvah to say a bracha when we enjoy something in Hashem’s world. We say a bracha before we eat delicious foods or sip refreshing drinks. We say a bracha when we smell a wonderful aroma, like besamim. We also say a bracha when we see something incredible that Hashem created, like lightning, or the gigantic ocean, or a tremendous waterfall.

One special bracha we make is called Birchas Ha’ilanos, the bracha on trees. We say this bracha during the month of Nisan, when we see a fruit tree blooming. As soon as we see leaves or flowers starting to grow from the branches of a fruit tree, we say this special bracha:

Baruch Ata Hashem Elokeinu Melech Ha’olam, Shelo Chisar Be’olamo Klum, U’vara Vo Briyos Tovos Ve’ilanos Tovos Leihanos Bahem Bnei Adam.” “Blessed are You Hashem, our Hashem, King of the Universe, that He did not leave anything out from His world, and He created good creations and good trees for people to enjoy.”

Keep your eyes open for a fruit tree starting to blossom so you can say the bracha! (Lechatchila we try to say it where there are at least two fruit trees.)

GEULAH U'MOSHIACH

Learning More Torah at the End of Golus

In one of the Yud-Alef Nisan farbrengens, the Rebbe spoke about the special Hakoras Hatov that the Rebbeim had. They realized that were able to do their important shlichus because of the chinuch they got when they were children! That is why they were so careful to make sure that all Yiddishe kinderlach were also able to get a proper Chinuch.

At this farbrengen, the Rebbe also spoke about why Chinuch is even MORE important at the end of Golus:

The Chachomim say that at the end of Golus, every day will come with new problems.

Why would the Chachomim say something like that? It doesn’t sound like a very happy thing, and won’t make us feel very good!

The Rebbe explains that there IS something good about this. Since there will be new problems every day, it must mean that Hashem will give us new kochos every day to overcome these problems!

The Chachomim told it to us so that we shouldn’t think that these kochos are extra, and that since we didn’t use them before, we don’t need them now. Because just like there are new problems that we didn’t have before, we need these new kochos that we didn’t have before, in a way of “Makdim Refuah Lemaka,” that Hashem sends the solution for the new problems before we get the problem.

And one of the best kochos we have to overcome problems is for children to spend MORE time learning Torah! At the farbrengen, the Rebbe asked that children add more time in their Torah learning.

That could make us feel bad today. Since so many of us aren’t able to go to school as usual, we have even LESS time every day to learn Torah! But we don’t have to be upset!

There are so many new ideas and projects coming out all of the time, so that we can spend at least a few extra minutes learning. Maybe we have watched videos that teach us something, read new books or opened new seforim, taken quizzes on our learning, or listened to Torah stories that help us understand things better.

It is true that even with all of these things we are STILL spending less time learning. But soon, IY”H, this big problem will go away and we’ll all be able to go back to school or Yeshiva! We should make hachlatos now, that even when we are learning a full day in school, we will still do all of the extra learning we are doing now! That way, we WILL be spending much more time on learning Torah!
