Hello!

In these strange and tumultuous times, our cartoonists continue to work and provide you with visual perspectives on the coronavirus pandemic. Most cartoonists are quite used to working in self-isolation, so we are perhaps somewhat less affected than others. Check out our newsroom to catch up with the latest coronavirus cartoons.

We hope you enjoy our newsletter. Take care and stay healthy!

The Coronavirus Crisis in 10 Cartoons

Our cartoonists are almost exclusively drawing about the coronavirus these days. We publish one cartoon on our homepage each day and share another one later in the day on our social media channels. This means loads and loads of cartoons do not get the attention from us that they deserve.

On our blog, we have made a top 10 of cartoons that we haven't published elsewhere yet; they offer perspectives on the various aspects of the coronavirus crisis.

New Cartoonists

It's a sad fact that cartoons thrive in times of crisis. We also see this in the number of applications that we get. In the last month, over 100 cartoonists applied to join Cartoon Movement. These are the ones we decided to welcome into our network:

Allan McDonald is a cartoonist that was born in Honduras and now lives in the United States. He has been working for 29 years, publishing in the New York Times and Le Monde Diplomatique, among others.

Nadia Dhab, working under the pen name Dlog, is a cartoonist from Tunisia. See more of her work on her Facebook page.

Ali Rastroo is a painter, illustrator and cartoonist from Iran.

Andrea Arroyo
is a Mexican-born, New York-based artist working in a variety of media. Her artwork has been published extensively including in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Nation, The Manhattan Times and The International Herald Tribune.

Pedro Ribeiro Ferreira is a cartoonist from Lisbon, Portugal. Check out his blog to see more of his work.

Press Freedom Cartoon Competition Longlist

In light of the COVID-19 outbreak, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, in close consultation with UNESCO, has decided to postpone the World Press Freedom Conference until October. Our jury did convene to select a winner in our cartoon competition, but he/she will be revealed later this year, along with a selection of 10 cartoons that will be part of a prominent exhibition at the World Forum in The Hague. For now, we have published the longlist of 70 cartoons that the jury chose from 600 submissions.
