A couple of months ago we announced a realignment of our environmental research programs, centers & institutes under the newly named "Institute of Environment". This month, we have updated our social media handles to match our new name. The new Institute handles are now @FIUEnvironment.

Deep-sea shrimp are covered in organs that see light

Many deep-sea creatures have organs all over their bodies that emit light... The organs, called photophores, cannot see shapes but FIU marine scientist Heather Bracken-Grissom says they are capable of detecting light. She led a research team that took a closer look at these luminous organs in deep-sea shrimp.

The conservation outlook for mangroves has shifted to a more optimistic track. However, there are still challenges when it comes to ensuring the progress that’s been made isn’t lost. Danielle Ogurcak, FIU postdoctoral associate, co-authored a correspondence in Current Biology looking at some of the reasons for this shift.

About: The Tropical Conservation Institute in the FIU Institute of Environment is holding a webinar series about the impact that COVID-19 is having on the conservation world. The goal of this online seminar series is to present wildlife-conservation practitioners discussing a broad array of topics relevant to how conservation is being impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

The first webinar is "Wildlife in a Changed World: Parrot Conservation in Crisis" and will take place on Tuesday, April 14. In this first webinar, experts in parrot conservation and zoonotic disease will discuss the future of parrot conservation in light of the coronavirus pandemic. Panelists include: Dr. LoraKim Joyner, Dr. Branson Ritchie, Juan Carlos Cantú and the moderator will be Dr. Paul Reillo. The webinar is free and open to the public.
