Stay Safe & Neighborhood Updates Edition
March 2020

Changes to Our Neighborhood Events

Because of the coronavirus social distancing guidelines, two popular upcoming neighborhood events have been unfortunately cancelled or postponed:
  • The Easter Egg Hunt, scheduled for April 11, has been cancelled. A new event for children is under consideration for later in the year. We’ll keep you posted.
  • The annual Neighborhood Association meeting, scheduled for April 27, has been postponed. When a new date is selected we’ll let you know.
Speaking of the coronavirus and social distancing, we have a couple of items that are of interest to the neighborhood

Can you Sew? Help Health Care Workers

Janice Chandler at 1331 45th Ave N, has started a grassroots project of making face masks for health care workers. Janice reports:

“I have given 78 to a cancer center and giving several to ER nurses at St Anthony’s. We have a request for 800 masks for area nursing homes. We are in desperate need of people who sew. I have kits ready to go that make 20 masks each. All you have to do is understand basic sewing. The masks are very easy to make.”

This is a wonderful volunteer effort. And it is all based on donations.  You can email Janice at JCLL58@yahoo

Wave Hello

These are stressful times for everyone, so as we stay home don’t for get to wave to your neighbors and shout hello [from a safe distance] to those you encounter when you walk the neighborhood.

Safety and Security in the Neighborhood

While it is always important for neighbors to watch over neighbors and the neighborhood, there have been a couple of incidents that prompt this reminder.

Recently there have been suspicious individuals wandering in the neighborhood. While one of individuals has been reported to the police, they can’t be arrested for just being in the neighborhood. St. Petersburg police sergeant Jason Deary told Nina Light, our Crime Watch coordinator, that the individual is not violent or dangerous. However, if a situation is uncomfortable or worse, call either the police non-emergency number, 893-7780, or 911. Of course, keep Nina appraised as well at at 522-4485

Our second request is for neighborhood resident make sure their garage doors are closed and the cars, parked in their driveway or on the street in front of your house, are locked and items of valuable not visible. At night, if you can, keep your porch lights on.

If you see anything out of the ordinary, please call police non-emergency number, 893-7780, or 911. Of course, keep Nina appraised as well at 522-4485. She asks that you call her “immediately, not two or three days later. I can be there quickly to help.”

Finally, with more neighbors ordering from online sites so we can practice good social distancing, make sure you know when you packages will arrive so you can prevent them from lingering on the porch. Some e-commerce sites allow you to tell delivery people to put the package behind a plant or elsewhere out of view.
