DALI Newsletter March 2020

Welcome to the March 2020 edition of the DALI Newsletter from DiiA. We hope that you are all safe and well in these challenging times. Where possible, DiiA is continuing to work towards its various technical goals. We expect to announce various online opportunities in the near future to keep everyone informed of our progress.

In this newsletter, you’ll find information about the addition of tunable white LED drivers to the DALI-2 certification program, as well as news about the first certified Zhaga-D4i luminaires. Also, our membership has continued to grow, and we have welcomed many new companies since the start of this year.

DiiA debuts DALI-2 certification of tunable white LED drivers

DiiA has expanded the scope of the DALI-2 certification program to include tunable white colour control.

The colour temperature Tc method of colour control has been added as a feature for DALI-2 control gear such as LED drivers. Commonly referred to as "tunable white", Tc allows control of the correlated colour temperature (CCT) along the black-body line, from warm white to cool white.

“DALI-2 certification for tunable white colour control has important implications for well-being and productivity in buildings,” says Paul Drosihn, DiiA General Manager. “For example, colour temperature control at different times of the day, coupled with light intensity measurements and occupancy detection from DALI-2 sensors, results in comfortable and efficient lighting schemes.”

DALI-2 certification of LED drivers has been available since mid-2017. All DALI-2 drivers have compulsory attributes such as a standardized dimming curve. Tunable white colour control is now added to the list of optional features for LED drivers, which also includes the ability to store and report a rich set of luminaire, energy and diagnostics data (DiiA Parts 251-253 respectively).

The other main colour types are RGBWAF (known as "RGB colour control”) and xy-coordinate (known as “xy colour control”). DiiA is developing DALI-2 tests for these colour types so they can be included in the DALI-2 certification program at a later date.

First DALI-2 tunable white LED drivers

A number of DALI-2 tunable white LED drivers are now listed as certified products in the DiiA online Product Database. The first such DALI-2 devices were from DiiA member eldoLED (part of Acuity Brands Lighting, Inc. - see news), and these have now been joined by products from China-based Dongguan BOKE LED Drivers Co., Ltd, as well as HEP Tech Co., Ltd., Delta Electronics, Inc., and Artilect Green Co., Ltd. of Taiwan.

Tunable white LED drivers can be found in the DiiA Product Database by selecting the following filters at the left-hand side of the screen:
>> Control gear >> Colour Control >> Colour Type Tc

DALI and wireless

As previously announced, DiiA is investigating different opportunities to combine wireless communication links with DALI lighting control (see News). Our "Wireless Gateway" and "Part 104 Wireless" subgroups are making strong progress, and we have signed liaison agreements with the Zigbee Alliance and the Thread Group.  Stay tuned over the coming months for further announcements.

First Zhaga-D4i luminaires are certified

Several outdoor LED luminaries have received Zhaga-D4i certification, as part of the joint program from Zhaga and DiiA.

The first certified Zhaga-D4i luminaires were the Luma Gen2 from Signify (see image, right), followed by the Flexia and Izylum (see image, left) fixtures from Schréder.

Zhaga-D4i luminaires have a powered Zhaga receptacle, which can accommodate a sensor or communication node with a corresponding Zhaga plug.

Also, Zhaga-D4i luminaires use LED drivers meeting the D4i requirements, including the availability of DALI-2 luminaire, energy and diagnostics data.

The first Zhaga-D4i luminaires are outdoor fixtures that are certified in accordance with  Zhaga Book 18 Ed 2.0.

More Zhaga-D4i luminaires are likely to be certified soon, especially since there are already more than 30 certified D4i drivers listed in the DiiA product database, from at least 3 manufacturers.
