Duke One Health Team Identifies First Evidence That
Influenza D Infects Poultry
Duke One Health team members recently collaborated with researchers in Malaysia in publishing a novel study showing the first evidence that influenza D viruses may infect poultry. They also demonstrated how aerosol sampling can be used to noninvasively conduct surveillance for viruses among poultry.

Duke One Health Team Members Monitoring Airborne Respiratory Viruses in a General Pediatric Ward in Singapore
Duke-NUS researchers and Duke One Health team members Su Yadana and Kristen Coleman collected and analyzed air samples in order to demonstrate potential for airborne respiratory viruses to circulate among hospitalized children, nursing staff and visitors. Published in the Journal of Public Health Research, the study detected airborne virus in nine (32%) of 28 samples. Among the nine positive samples, eight were PCR-positive for adenovirus and one for influenza A virus.

One Health Team Efforts in The Fight Against COVID-19
In light of the rising threat of COVID-19, the Duke One Health team has put together several research projects to characterize the SARS-CoV-2 virus and better understand its transmission dynamics. These studies use epidemiological, diagnostic, and surveillance approaches to gain an edge on the novel coronavirus pandemic and get a head start on detecting other pathogens with pandemic potential at the human-animal interface.

One Health team member, Dr. Gregory Gray, was recently interviewed for the Headscratchers podcast from Duke University School of Medicine. This podcast is entitled “Coronavirus: Why Did It Catch Us Off Guard?” in which he discussed the reasons why COVID-19 spread so quickly, the mortality rate compared to other viruses, and how we can prevent potential future pandemics. One Health Team Member Successfully Defends Thesis
Last month, Duke One Health team member, Anfal Abdelgadir, successfully defended her thesis work conducted in Malaysia during the summer of 2019. Anfal presented and discussed her work evaluating a novel molecular diagnostic assay for detection of Plasmodium knowlesi, which is currently the most common cause of human malaria in Malaysia.

One Health Training Program Graduate Conducts One Health Training in Egypt
One Health Training Program graduate of 2016, Asmaa Abdelnaby, MD, conducted a One Health training in February of 2020 as the first course in a JICA Suez-Canal University training program entitled “Research and Crisis Manangemnt in Combating Emerging Disease in Africa.” The 20 attendees were all public health specialist with different medical, non-medical, and environmental backgrounds from 8 different African countries (Nigeria, South Sudan, Kenya, kongo, Zambia, Malawi, Ethiopia and Egypt).
