 What's happening?

School Closed: extended to May 1, 2020
Wednesday, April 1: Paraprofessional Appreciation Day
SFUSD Update
The SFUSD has officially announced that schools are now closed until May 1. They are continuing to update their website every week so please continue to check it for the most up to date information.

Resources for families including free meals, childcare options and access to technology can also been found here. Please note, the meal collection days have changed. Free grab and go meals will be available only on Mondays and Wednesdays between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. at these 16 sites, to reduce the number of days families have to leave their homes to get food. The amount of food each family receives will still cover 5 days worth of food. Also, parents no longer have to bring their children to pick up the meals.

This short video explains the districts priorities during this time.
HMCRA Resources
HMCRA continues to update this spreadsheet that compiles numerous online learning platforms.

The school pantry also remains open (located where the old office was). Thank you to everyone who has donated!  As well as food, please donate cleaning products, diapers, wipes, and other sanitary products as these will be very helpful. If you are in need of some basic food items, please come by the school to pick up what you need.
Medical and Essential Workers
Thank you to everyone in our Parent Community who are medical professionals or essential workers. We appreciate you and sacrifices you (and your families) are making to keep the rest of us safe!
Rainbow Scavenger Hunt

Children across the country have been putting rainbows up in their front windows to spread a little joy in these difficult times. Thank you to everyone who created and shared rainbows. Even a couple of real rainbows were spotted!

If you spot a rainbow or would like to share a picture of your rainbow in the next newsletter please email communications@harveymilk.com.

You can now also add your rainbow to this map along with pictures of rainbows that you spot.
Ms Francis - In the media!
Our wonderful 1st Grade teacher, Ms. Francis, seems to currently be the face of all inspirational teachers across the county and country by being featured in the SF Chronicle and Budweiser commercial.
Facebook Edition
Following the disappointment of postponing the drag show, some of our parent community still got into the spirt of it by taking part in a virtual show. You can view and enjoy the performances and photos on our Facebook page here. This post also raised $330 for the school! Thank you to everyone who took part and donated.

The new date for the actual Drag show is May 16th. Please keep supporting and donating to your favorite contestant!  Donate here!
Construction Update
The work of the Modernization Project is continuing at HMCRA in accordance with the provisions of the Public Health Order. They are continuing work at Classrooms 205, 207, and 209 and taking advantage of the temporary school closure by getting a jump on some work that was scheduled for this Summer including work in the multipurpose room, the main stairwells, Staff Room 208, and the 2nd Floor Girl's restroom. The work at 205-209 will be complete next week and they will begin work at Office 211 and Classroom 213.

We are monitoring impacts from the Order that may impact our ability to continue or complete work and will adjust our work plans accordingly along with any revisions to our schedule due to changes in the current school schedule.
Distance Learning
Some classes have already implemented some form of online communication. The school and district are working with all teachers to set up and role out a more formal distance learning plan to begin on April 13. In the mean time please make sure your children are set up with their google classroom email account so teachers can share information and resources with you. More information on the district's continuous learning plan can be found here.

It is officially Spring Break this week so teachers will be using this time to get rested and stay healthy. More information will be provided soon.
Free Internet
While schools are out and we rely more on online and distant learning, a number of internet providers are offering free or reduced priced internet service.
  • Comcast: The company is offering Internet Essentials as an affordable way for homes who receive public assistance to get online. The plan is available for about $10 per month. In addition, they are increasing speeds for all customers in response to emergency measures associated with the coronavirus, and new customers receive two months free.
  • Charter/SpectrumCharter Communications is offering free Spectrum broadband and Wi-Fi access for 60 days to households with K-12 or college students at any service level up to 100 Mbps. Installation fees are also waived. This is only for homes that do not already have a Spectrum broadband subscription.
  • Mediacom: This ISP is upgrading its low-cost Connect2Compete internet program and offering 60 days of free service for qualifying families who subscribe before May 15.
  • Suddenlink: New household with K-12 or college students who do not currently have home internet access can get free internet for 60 days.
Harvey Milk has been recognized as a Common Sense School, but you can also use Common Sense in the home. Common Sense Media rates and reviews games, apps, and websites (as well as movies, tv, and books) for quality and safety, which is especially important now, since our kids may be spending more time online than ever!
Stay Connected
While school is out we would love to hear from you so we can all stay connected. We would love to share what you have been doing with your children while they remain home. Fun offline educational ideas, art and craft projects, gardening, your children's favorite online exercise videos or story time. You can share stories and photos to communications@harveymilk.com

Thank you!
