The public health facing tool, built on Microsoft Azure maps, enables healthcare providers and communities battling the COVID-19 pandemic to identify the social determinants of health (SDOH) that put populations at greater risk, informing community planning and resource allocation to proactively mitigate the risk to vulnerable populations."

Western Illinois University News: WIU EAGIS Department and GIS Center Create Statewide Statewide COVID-19 Dashboard to Monitor Reported Cases - "The Western Illinois University GIS Center, in cooperation with the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Geographic Information Sciences (EAGIS), have assembled a statewide web map to monitor the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus) in Illinois."

The News International: COVID-19 info centre to be set up at Dawood University - "A multidisciplinary group comprising doctors, epidemiologists, virologists, geneticists, geographic information system (GIS) experts, computer engineers, data analysts and representatives of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) are planning to develop a GIS covering coronavirus cases at the union councils’ level."

Alabama's News Leader: Samford University Interactive Map: COVID-19 cases in Alabama - "Samford University’s Department of Geography and Sociology has developed a pandemic data dashboard for Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Alabama."

APSU: APSU GIS Center develops statewide coronavirus map - "The online tool provides information on each county by pulling data from the Tennessee Department of Health's website, which is updated every day at 2 p.m."

PsychCentral: Ohio Study IDs Those at Highest Risk for Opioid Addiction - "A research team, led by the University of Cincinnati, looked at Ohio Health Department records from 2010 to 2017 to help identify the populations at greatest risk of opioid overdose." White men between 30-39 are most at risk, and there are several hot spots, many in the big cities.

SIUE: NSF Funds SIUE GEOPATHS Program to Build Education and Career Pathways - "The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded $382,636 to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville for its collaborative GEOPATHS-EXTRA program. GEOPATHS will build pathways to careers in the geosciences through research experiences and internships that demonstrate the value of geosciences to society. Students will study local environmental problems and develop solutions that have the potential to contribute to global environmental challenges."

Johns Hopkins CBID COVID-19 Design Challenge - "The Johns Hopkins Center for Bioengineering Innovation & Design (CBID) is inviting teams to apply to compete in a five-day, student-run, entirely online design challenge. Join us to develop innovative solutions to the problems posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants can be university students, faculty, and affiliates who register through this site and agree to the competition rules." Registration closed on March 24.

MIT: Beat the Pandemic - Similar to the one above, but registration is still open.
 
People

University of Denver: PhD Student Brings Personal Experience to Urban Geography - Nikolai Alvarado came to DU in 2011and will leave this spring with a PhD, and plans to head to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to serve as tenure-track faculty. His research explores the experience of Nicaraguan migrants in Costa Rica and their ability to carve out a unique form of citizenship through micropolitics.
