Until the next issue of dOWNtime, more than ever, stay well, and please keep safe and healthy.

Our friend, Catherine Barrett at Celebrate Ageing, has been overwhelmed by the response to her latest project #TheKindnessPandemic, a Facebook initiative which gives people the opportunity to post acts of kindness.

As COVID19 hits, many people's lives are being turned upside down and some people are panicking. We've seen some bad behaviour and many calls for a focus on kindness. This is a time for us to unite - it's time to spread kindness. Kindness won't make the virus go away, but it will make our days better.

#TheKindnessPandemic focuses on spreading kindness across the world. It's looking particularly for #IntersectionalKindness, or how we look out for people who are marginalised - older people, those living alone, people with disabilities, those with limited funds and people who are homeless.

Want to spread the Kindness Pandemic or read more about the Project? Click the link here.

 A message from the Tenants Union

Last night, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced that states and territories had agreed to a six month moratorium on evictions for renters in financial distress unable to meet their commitments due to the the impact of COVID19. However we are worried the announced moratorium does not go far enough.

Why‌ ‌there’s‌ ‌a‌ ‌problem‌ ‌
The PM's announcement ‌covers ‌evictions‌ ‌for‌ ‌non payment of rent as a result of financial difficulties arising from the COVID19 crisis.‌ But‌ ‌people‌ ‌who‌ ‌rent‌ ‌can‌ ‌be‌ ‌evicted‌ ‌for‌ ‌many‌ ‌other‌ ‌reasons‌ ‌-‌ ‌including‌ for‌ no‌ reason‌ at‌ all.‌ Regardless‌ of‌ the‌ reason,‌ an‌ eviction‌ ‌means‌ a‌ risk‌ of‌ catching‌ or‌ transmitting‌ COVID19.‌ ‌With the current physical distancing and movement restrictions in place, it may not be possible for people to pack up and move their entire homes at all. That’s‌ ‌why‌ ‌we‌ ‌need‌ ‌to‌ ‌stop‌ ‌all‌ ‌evictions‌ ‌at‌ ‌this‌ ‌time.‌ ‌

What‌ ‌the‌ ‌solution‌ ‌looks‌ ‌like‌ ‌
In‌ ‌Tasmania,‌ ‌no‌ ‌“notice‌ ‌to‌ ‌vacate”‌ ‌will‌ ‌have‌ ‌an‌ ‌effect‌ ‌until‌ ‌30‌ ‌June‌ ‌2020.‌ ‌This‌ ‌gives‌ ‌at‌ ‌least‌ ‌3‌ ‌months‌ ‌where‌ ‌people‌ ‌who‌ ‌rent‌ ‌don’t‌ ‌have‌ ‌to‌ ‌worry‌ ‌about‌ ‌losing‌ ‌their‌ ‌home.‌ ‌This‌ ‌is‌ ‌what‌ ‌is‌ ‌needed‌ ‌to‌ ‌keep‌ ‌renters‌ ‌and‌ ‌the‌ ‌community‌ ‌safe‌ ‌-‌ ‌and‌ ‌it’s‌ ‌needed‌ ‌for‌ ‌all‌ ‌renters.‌ ‌We also need our governments to make sure measures are put in place to ensure renters don't get saddled with massive debts for arrears as has already been announced for commercial tenants, that ensure renters can:
  • seek rent relief or temporary amendments to the lease
  • apply for a reduction or waiver of rent if they are facing financial difficulties
  • terminate leases and/or seek mediation or conciliation on the grounds of financial distress

How you can act

It’s‌ ‌now‌ ‌up‌ ‌to‌ ‌State‌ ‌and‌ ‌Territory‌ ‌Governments to implement what was decided at last night's National Cabinet Meeting.‌ ‌Write to NSW Minister for Housing, Melinda Pavey, to let her know that NSW should be looking to Tasmania's example and making sure the Eviction Moratorium stops all evictions, for all renters. You can write to her through this link

There‌ ‌should‌ ‌be‌ ‌no‌ ‌evictions‌ ‌in‌ ‌a‌ ‌health‌ ‌crisis.‌ ‌If‌ ‌we‌ ‌want‌ ‌people‌ ‌to‌ ‌stay‌ ‌at‌ ‌home‌ ‌and‌ ‌keep‌ ‌themselves‌ ‌and‌ ‌their‌ ‌communities‌ ‌safe,‌ ‌we‌ ‌need‌ ‌to‌ ‌make‌ ‌sure‌ ‌their‌ ‌home‌ ‌is‌ ‌secure.‌ ‌This‌ ‌means‌ ‌stopping‌ ‌all ‌evictions‌ ‌for‌ ‌all ‌renters,‌ ‌including‌ ‌boarders‌ ‌and‌ ‌lodgers.‌ ‌

A safe place to isolate

Find A Bed Australia is a community of volunteers connecting people in need to those willing to help. They came together during the height of the bushfire crisis to be a safe and accessible point of contact for those in need of emergency accommodation.

Isolation is a crucial tool to fight the spread of COVID-2019. Many of our health care professionals, who are putting themselves at risk every day, need a place they can stay away from their family members.

Find a Bed is connecting people who need a place to isolate safely with people and businesses who have vacant property they can offer. Are you are a healthcare worker needing accommodation or has the COVID19 pandemic left you needing a place to stay? Maybe you have a vacant property or self contained accommodation at your property which you want to offer to help out. Check out this much needed and amazing service. Learn more here.

A new website,  ‘Our Place’ has been developed by Women With Disabilities Australia.

This resource has specifically been developed  for Women with Disabilities and contains sections on: Your Rights; Lead & Take Part; Life Choices, Sex & Your Body, Safety & Violence and Real Stories. The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) is calling on energy businesses to put customers first during the current global health crisis.

Launching the Statement of Expectations of energy businesses: Protecting consumers and the energy market during COVID-19 the AER has reiterated that energy is an essential service and that the energy market has an important role to play in protecting and supporting businesses and the community through the COVID-19 pandemic and our recovery.

Key AER expectations include:

  • that energy retailers offer payment plans or hardship arrangements to all residential and small business customers who indicate they may be in financial stress;
  • no disconnection of any residential or small business customers who may be in financial stress;
  • deferring referrals of customers to debt collection agencies for recovery actions, or credit default listing until at least 31 July 2020; and
  • waiving disconnection, reconnection and/or contract break fees for small businesses that have ceased operation.
“If you are a residential or small business customer concerned you may have trouble paying your bill, get in touch with your retailer immediately and seek their support,” said AER Chair Clare Savage.

We would like to make the point here that the government has to step in and make these steps mandatory for energy providers who have been making enormous profits.

Have you applied for the Seniors Energy Rebate? It is available for eligible independent retirees to help cover the cost of their electricity. Apply here.
