Dave's Corner 💭

Before the crisis began here, I was lucky to:
- Have a close friend who runs a company deeply enmeshed with China that was closely following the situation and reporting back
- Be naturally worried about things like this
- Be a news hawk
- Understand basic math and biology

So, that led me to start preparing in February before stores ran out of essentials. Unfortunately, no amount of preparation or carefulness could prepare me for possibly getting the virus (or a bad flu) myself. It's been the worst respiratory virus I've had in my entire life (assuming all of the symptoms are caused by the virus, and not my psychosomatic reaction to having a virus at this time (I definitely have something, it's just a matter of how much is it and how much is my reaction to it)) and it's really taken me out the past couple of weeks. Three weeks ago I was doing 100 flights of stairs (50 up/50 down). Two weeks ago I could barely do a 2 mile walk around the neighborhood. One week ago I was having trouble walking around the house. I'm doing significantly better now than I was a week ago, and hopefully that continues. I've almost never had a cold/flu that affected me much beyond a runny nose for a few days, and here I am at 2.5 weeks since symptoms started and still having issues. But I'm on the mend it seems. I have a colleague who's been going through something similar, and if he's reading, I hope he's getting better too. The worst by far has been the hot flashes during the night.

I've had to disconnect while under self-quarantine. On top of being sick, I couldn't take the national news anymore. It made me too nervous when I was already feeling hot and tired. Now, the only news I read each day is BTV Daily and MacRumors.com. I've started meditating each day. I'm of course still dealing with family and work issues related to the virus, so I'm not totally disconnected. I know vaguely through others what is going on nationally, and through BTV Daily I know what's going on locally.

But for the most part I've retreated into the little world of my house and my remote work. Maybe when I get over the last bits of this virus, I will have the stomach for Dr. Fauci and President Trump again. But until then, whether I'm mainly struggling with an actual virus, or the mental affects of having one at this time, disconnecting has helped me. If you're struggling, maybe disconnecting would help you too.

Random Burlingtonian Quote of the Day 📝

...classic philosophy maintained that change, and consequently time, are marks of inferior reality, holding that true and ultimate reality is immutable and eternal. Human reasons, all too human, have given birth to the idea that over and beyond the lower realm of things that shift like the sands on the seashore there is the kingdom of the unchanging, of the complete, the perfect. The grounds for the belief are couched in the technical language of philosophy, but the grounds for the cause is the heart's desire for surcease from change, struggle, and uncertainty. The eternal and immutable is the consummation of mortal man's quest for certainty.

—John Dewey
