The lie: "This device is working properly." It wasn't.
Computer lied, collaboration died

Last night Emil Ninkure and I tried to work together "live" on John chapter 12. I could see the translation on his computer screen and we could hear each other well as we engaged in small talk for the first few minutes.

But as soon as we started working on the translation, his computer went mute. Do you think "somebody" didn't want us to make progress on the translation?

90 minutes of trouble-shooting* later, we gave up for the night.

We will continue to work on John 11-13 together by exchanging notes and drafts. Monday night at 6:00 we will try again.

Thank you for praying for the requests below.

How can we pray for you as we serve our King together?

John Nystrom (& for Bonnie)
Praise and Prayer

Praise the Lord with us

* For good health so far, and no virus symptoms among any family members.
* For good progress this week on John 11-13.
* For a good internet connection in Arop village.

Please pray for

* Me and my teammates as we try to fix Emil's computer's sound issue.

* Leaders in Papua New Guinea at every level who are dealing with virus-related issues similar to what we are dealing with here in the U.S.

* Me and Bonnie as we try to protect our vulnerable elderly parents

* Me as I put together a collaboration plan for our team to make as much progress as possible on John's gospel in Arop, so that when the translators from all the other languages are able to work together again, we will have many chapters ready for them to draft from.
* For those who wonder what we tried: We were using VSee. Video both directions worked, but we turned it off to save bandwidth. Sound continued to work without video. VSee sound settings were all correct on both machines. Both potential sound output devices were "working properly" according to Windows. Software and hardware mute/unmute changed nothing. Raising volume in Volume Mixer changed nothing. Headphones and speaker both were completely mute. Plugging and unplugging his headphones made no difference. His computer could not play music, nor play any other sound. We rebooted both computers. I skyped with Bonnie briefly to test my mic. Until that moment, he had never had any trouble with sound on his computer.

What we do
Since 1987 we have been training local Papua New Guinean church leaders to translate the Bible into their own languages and coaching them through the process from first draft to publication.

We serve in the Aitape West Translation Project, which is producing and distributing Bible translations in 11 languages in print, electronic, audio, and video form; training local people to use the translations; and training the local translators to help other translators do the same in still more languages.

We have written about how a tsunami changed the face of Bible translation in Papua New Guinea in our bookSleeping Coconuts. It is available here on Kindle or here in paperback.

Wycliffe has released a short film called "Arop" about this amazing story. The one-minute book trailer is here
